Internship Casac information

What is an internship CASAC?

An Internship CASAC is a supervised training position for individuals pursuing certification as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Interns gain practical experience by working with clients dealing with substance use disorders under the guidance of licensed professionals. This internship is a key step in meeting the educational and experiential requirements needed for full CASAC certification, often involving direct counseling, case management, and participation in treatment planning. Interns also receive feedback and supervision to develop their skills and understanding of ethical and professional standards in addiction counseling.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship CASAC?

As an intern at CASAC, you will typically support senior staff with research, data entry, and client communications related to substance abuse prevention and advocacy initiatives. You may also assist in organizing community outreach events, preparing educational materials, and tracking program outcomes. Collaboration with other interns and cross-functional teams is common, offering valuable exposure to real-world nonprofit operations. This hands-on experience helps build practical skills and provides insight into the daily workings of organizations focused on public health and social services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship CASAC, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship CASAC, you need foundational knowledge in substance abuse counseling, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of an approved CASAC training program. Familiarity with case management software, electronic health records, and state certification or registration requirements is important. Strong interpersonal communication, empathy, and active listening skills help interns build rapport with clients and support their recovery journeys. These competencies are crucial for providing effective care, meeting regulatory standards, and fostering positive outcomes in substance abuse treatment.
