Job Description

Help keep Hilo Benioff Medical Center safe, functional, and well-maintained by supporting the skilled trades team responsible for hospital renovations, construction, and maintenance. As a Carpenter Helper, you will work alongside carpenters and other skilled building tradesmen to perform a variety of maintenance and repair tasks throughout the facility, helping ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on facility equipment, including beds, carts, overbed tables, exhaust fans, air compressors, boilers, hot water heaters, sterilizers, refrigerators, and other utility equipment.
  • Assist painters with sanding, repainting, and varnishing walls, cabinets, furniture, porches, steps, shower areas, and other surfaces.
  • Assist carpenters with repairing and replacing window panes, screens, door hardware, bathroom accessories, flooring, shelves, and other building components, as well as repairing roof leaks.
  • Assist plumbers with maintenance and minor repairs to water and sewer systems, including faucets, sinks, shower valves, toilets, drains, and related fixtures.
  • Assist electricians with minor electrical repairs, including replacing fixtures, switches, outlets, and wiring, while safely using a variety of hand tools and power equipment.
  • Perform grounds and facility maintenance, including repairs to concrete sidewalks, curbing, roadways, retaining walls, drainage areas, and other assigned projects; operate vehicles as needed to transport materials.


Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred. Completion of an approved carpentry apprenticeship program is preferred.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing a variety of rough and finished carpentry work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Knowledge of basic carpentry practices and methods, including appropriate safety procedures.
    • Familiarity with common tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry trade.
    • Ability to work independently, follow specific instructions, identify when assistance is needed, and work cooperatively with staff, departments, and outside services.
    • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position and comply with applicable safety, infection control, hospital, and regulatory requirements.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements
