The region is widely known as an outdoor recreational paradise for campers, boaters, cyclists, climbers, cavers, and hikers, all while being conveniently located within two hours of Atlanta, Nashville, and Knoxville.Summary/Objectives​The Carpenter is responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair, and installation of carpentry-related building systems and components across Covenant College's campus. This position performs skilled carpentry work supporting the College's academic, residential, and administrative facilities while ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and with a high standard of craftsmanship. The Carpenter also supervises assigned student employees, assists with emergency response, coordinates with contractors as needed, and contributes to the overall maintenance and stewardship of the College's physical campus.Essential FunctionsCarpentry, Construction & MaintenanceConstruct, install, maintain, repair, and replace structural building components including framing, flooring systems, walls, ceilings, roofs, trim, cabinetry, windows, doors, and related building elements.Design, fabricate, and install custom carpentry projects to meet departmental and campus needs.Repair, restore, and maintain furniture, cabinetry, millwork, doors, door hardware, windows, and other architectural finishes.Replace broken or damaged windows and glazing as assigned.Evaluate building conditions and recommend appropriate repair or replacement solutions.Maintain a high standard of workmanship while ensuring repairs and installations comply with applicable building codes and safety standards.Shop Operations & Student SupervisionSupervise, train, and mentor student employees assigned to the Carpentry Shop.Instruct student workers in the safe operation of tools, equipment, and responsible work practices.Assign, oversee, and inspect student work to ensure quality and safety expectations are met.Maintain an organized, clean, and safe carpentry shop and work environment.Maintain shop inventory and coordinate the procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to support ongoing operations.Campus OperationsRespond to after-hours emergency maintenance calls involving carpentry-related issues and assist other maintenance personnel during campus emergencies as needed.Monitor and coordinate the work of outside contractors when assigned.Safely operate College vehicles, lifts, tractors, backhoes, articulating boom lifts, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.Support other Facilities personnel with cross-functional maintenance activities as operational needs require.Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance Operations to support the mission and operational needs of Covenant College.General CompetenciesMission Alignment - Demonstrates commitment to Covenant College's Christ-centered mission and stewardship of campus resources.Craftsmanship - Produces high-quality work while demonstrating pride in workmanship and attention to detail.Safety Awareness - Consistently follows established safety procedures and promotes safe work practices for employees and student workers.Technical Expertise - Demonstrates strong knowledge of commercial carpentry, building construction methods, woodworking equipment, and repair techniques.Problem Solving - Evaluates maintenance issues, identifies practical solutions, and completes repairs efficiently and effectively.Leadership - Provides positive supervision, coaching, and instruction to student employees while fostering accountability and professional growth.Communication & Teamwork - Works cooperatively with Facilities staff, campus departments, contractors, students, and other members of the College community.Adaptability - Responds effectively to changing priorities, emergencies, and diverse maintenance responsibilities.Working ConditionsWork is performed primarily on campus in maintenance shops, mechanical spaces, residence halls, academic buildings, and outdoor environments. The position routinely works in varying weather conditions and may be exposed to dust, noise, vibration, chemicals, solvents, heights, confined spaces, and other conditions associated with construction and maintenance work.
