What is carnival engineering?

Carnival Engineering refers to the design, construction, and maintenance of rides, attractions, and equipment used in carnivals, amusement parks, and fairs. Professionals in this field are responsible for ensuring that all mechanical and structural components are safe, reliable, and compliant with regulations. They may work on roller coasters, Ferris wheels, games, and temporary installations, often collaborating with safety inspectors and event organizers. Carnival engineers need a strong background in mechanical or electrical engineering, along with specialized knowledge of amusement ride technologies and safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carnival engineer?

To thrive as a Carnival Engineer, you need strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, safety regulations, and typically a degree or certification in engineering or a related technical field. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, CAD software, and industry-standard safety inspection protocols is crucial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are soft skills that make someone excel in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of rides and attractions, directly impacting guest safety and satisfaction.

Collaboration with multinational crew members and adapting quickly to unexpected technical issues are daily aspects of the job. This role also requires strict compliance with maritime safety and environmental regulations.

Job description

The Digital Product Manager oversees the development, launch, and support of digital capabilities in the Pre-Cruise retail environment on Carnival.com. Specific areas of focus may include e-commerce sales of shore excursions, premium dining, spa packages, and other enhancements available for purchase after the guest has purchased their cruise fare; promotional capabilities; or guest experience enhancements. This role encompasses the entire end-to-end Product Management lifecycle, including developing new capabilities, serving as the Product Owner in a Scrum environment, and collaborating with business stakeholders, prospective guests, engineering, QA, IT, network, and other technology teams. The Digital Product Manager leads idea generation, evaluation, product definition, UX/UI design, roadmap prioritization, engineering and development, rollout, measurement, and analytics. This role balances both strategy and execution, offering the opportunity to interact with all functions, manage the development of diverse products, and deliver significant, positive results for the business.
Essential Functions:
  • Oversees the product development lifecycle from ideation to launch. Prioritizes features, sets clear requirements, manages the product backlog, actively participates in Scrum ceremonies, and ensures timely delivery of high-quality products.
  • Develops and communicates a clear product strategy and vision. Creates and maintains a product roadmap that aligns with company goals and consumer needs.
  • Partners with cross-functional team and stakeholders - including engineering, design, merchandising, operations, and onboard revenue - throughout the end-to-end process to ensure alignment and successful product delivery.
  • Works closely with our UX/UI design agency to develop an intuitive and engaging user experience. Conducts usability testing and gathers user feedback to make data-driven decisions for product enhancements that achieve desired business outcomes.
  • Establishes and monitors key business metrics to measure success. Analyzes data to identify product improvement areas. Gathers feedback from consumers, stakeholders, and developers to understand customer pain points, business needs, and the competitive landscape.
  • Prepares and presents regular business updates to stakeholders in-person and in-writing. Creates business reports, training/troubleshooting guides, and related product documentation and presentations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Scope: This role is part of a lean team that will set the strategy and priorities for the Pre-Cruise section of Carnival.com. The role will partner with stakeholders to secure input and ideas from across the organization and then synthesize those requests into a strategic roadmap that helps deliver our business targets. The role will also have responsibility for working directly with their respective Scrum Team to ensure complete and on-time delivery of their projects.
  • Problem solving: This role will require significant problem solving skills to be used across analytical, design, and internal spectra. Examples may include consumer pain points in the shopping journey, business challenges, CVR bottlenecks, UX reinventions, and competing roadmap priorities.
  • Impact: The work led by this role will have a significant impact on the revenue for the Carnival brand, and on the end-to-end guest experience. Projects in this space will not only help increase sales in the critically important Pre-Cruise period, it will also be a frequently-visited part of the overall guest journey that will help introduce them to and prepare them for their upcoming cruise.
  • Leadership: The DPM in this role will lead a Scrum Team to deliver key projects central to the success of our Pre-Cruise revenue and productivity goals. They will manage the allocation of resources to the individual projects, and as the primary owner of prioritization, will work with cross-functional stakeholders to both secure requests and to communicate how and why things are sequenced on the roadmap.

Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in Product Management and/or Product Ownership in an agile environment; a demonstrated history of leading and delivering successful digital products
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; or equivalent experience
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of digital product development and management drivers, challenges, trends, and best practices
  • Ability to lead consumer-facing digital innovation from ideation through deployment, while often managing multiple projects and keeping them on-track in a still-developing environment.
  • Exceptional critical thinking, innovative reasoning, organizational, time management, and adaptability skills to effectively manage changing priorities with a high level of quality
  • Ability to identify, prioritize, and articulate the highest-impact initiatives
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to interpret complex data and make informed decisions
  • Extensive experience working with diverse teams across various departments to build consensus and achieve common goals
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills for engaging with stakeholders at all levels, articulating the impact of initiatives and explaining concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong business judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, often requiring the use and exercise of independent judgment
  • Inner drive to achieve goals, maintain a positive attitude, and inspire others
  • Proficiency in managing relationships, building networks, and navigating social complexities in the workplace
  • Skilled with Figma, project management software (preferably Asana), and Google Analytics; proficient in Azure, BI, Sitecore, and ContentSquare
