Key Responsibilities

• Command the Circuit: Operate, monitor, and manage cardiopulmonary bypass systems with surgical precision during open-heart and related procedures.

Job Summary: The Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, analysis, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.

Essential Functions of the Role

• Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other personnel fully informed.
• Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used as well as the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.
• Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices.
• Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a manner that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.
• Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a manner that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.
• Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; analyzes and maintains records after surgery.
• Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment.
• Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

Key Success Factors

• Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.
• Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.
• Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.
• Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow throughout the body, of pressures and gas exchange within the body adult, pediatric and infant patients.
• Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products in association of support by extracorporeal circuits and devices.
• Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
• Verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow orders, take directions, and implement written perfusion protocols.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal support devices and providing patient care.
• Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies and protocols.
• Ability to work and cooperate in a flexible manner in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.
• Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.

• Certification/License/Registration: Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
