How much do perfusionist job jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for perfusionist job in the United States is $85.94, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67.07 and $93.99 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you make 300k as a perfusionist?

Perfusionists typically earn between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, with top earners in high-demand regions or with extensive experience potentially reaching or exceeding $200,000. Earning $300,000 is uncommon and usually requires advanced specialization, management roles, or working in high-cost-of-living areas. Certification, experience, and working overtime or in private practice can influence salary levels.

What is the difference between Perfusionist Job vs Cardiovascular Technologist?

AspectPerfusionist JobCardiovascular Technologist
CredentialsCertification (e.g., American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion)Post-secondary education, certification varies
Work EnvironmentOperating rooms during cardiac surgeriesDiagnostic labs, cath labs, operating rooms
Employer & IndustryHospitals, surgical centers, specialized cardiac facilitiesHospitals, diagnostic labs, outpatient clinics

Perfusionists and Cardiovascular Technologists both work in cardiac care settings, but perfusionists operate heart-lung machines during surgery, requiring specialized certification. Cardiovascular Technologists assist with diagnostic procedures and may have broader roles in cardiac testing. While their work environments overlap, perfusionists focus on intraoperative support, making their roles distinct within the cardiac care team.

Are perfusionists still in demand?

Perfusionists are in steady demand due to their specialized role in operating heart-lung machines during cardiac surgeries. The profession is expected to grow as the need for cardiovascular procedures increases and hospitals seek skilled professionals with certification and technical expertise.

What are perfusionists?

Perfusionists are specialized healthcare professionals who operate the heart-lung machine during cardiac surgery and other medical procedures that require cardiopulmonary bypass. They are responsible for managing the patient's physiological and metabolic needs while the heart and lungs are temporarily stopped. Perfusionists monitor and adjust equipment to ensure proper oxygenation, blood flow, and temperature, working closely with surgeons and anesthesiologists to ensure patient safety throughout the procedure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Perfusionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perfusionist, you need a solid background in cardiovascular physiology, anatomy, and medical technology, typically demonstrated by a degree in perfusion technology and certification such as CCP (Certified Clinical Perfusionist). Mastery of heart-lung machines, blood gas analyzers, and related monitoring systems is essential for the technical demands of the role. Strong attention to detail, composure under pressure, and effective communication are vital soft skills for patient safety and collaboration with surgical teams. These skills and qualifications ensure precise support during cardiac surgeries and critical procedures, directly impacting patient outcomes.

What are the typical challenges faced by perfusionists during complex surgeries, and how can they prepare for them?

Perfusionists often encounter challenges such as managing unexpected changes in patient physiology, responding to equipment malfunctions, and maintaining precise communication with the surgical team during high-stress procedures. Preparation involves staying current with the latest techniques, regularly participating in simulation training, and developing strong problem-solving skills. Building effective collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff is essential to ensure smooth workflow and patient safety during complex cardiac surgeries.

What jobs can a perfusionist get?

A perfusionist can work in hospitals and surgical centers, primarily operating heart-lung machines during cardiac surgeries. They may also find roles in research, medical device companies, or specialized clinics, often requiring certification and knowledge of cardiovascular and perfusion equipment.

Can you make 200k as a perfusionist?

Perfusionists typically earn salaries that vary based on experience, location, and workplace. While some highly experienced or specialized perfusionists in certain regions can earn around $200,000 annually, this is not common across all areas and often requires advanced certifications, overtime, or working in high-demand settings. Most perfusionists earn between $70,000 and $150,000 per year.
