Job description

Director, Global Market Demand Development

Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) โ€“ Hybrid, District of Columbia, US โ€“ Posted 2 days ago.

Job Description

About C2ES: Our mission is to secure a safe and stable climate by accelerating the lowโ€‘carbon economy. We are a trusted convener on climate policy, working with governments, businesses, and stakeholders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy, and strengthen climate resilience.

About Kinetic Coalition: An initiative within C2ES that unlocks capital through energy transition credits (ETCs) to power the clean energy transition in emerging economies. By enabling companies to purchase highโ€‘integrity ETCs, we support the early retirement of coal assets, accelerated renewables deployment, grid and storage improvements, and policy implementation.

Major Responsibilities
  • Oversee Kineticโ€™s engagement with corporations, providing strategic direction, managing member relationships, and coordinating a Community of Practice for peer exchange, market education, and transactional support.
  • Partner with the C2ES Business Engagement Team to align corporate engagement and leverage C2ES programs such as the Corporate Decarbonization and Renewable Thermal Coalition.
  • Develop and execute a global outreach strategy to recruit ETC buyers across voluntary and compliance markets, including corporations, airlines subject to CORSIA, companies under domestic carbon pricing schemes, and sovereign governments pursuing Articleโ€ฏ6.2 transactions.
  • Build business cases for ETC buyers, developing credible use cases for Scopeโ€ฏ2 and Scopeโ€ฏ3 insetting and offsetting.
  • Recruit and engage partners (development institutions, industry groups, brokers, traders, aggregators, sustainability advisory firms) to build demand and expand Kineticโ€™s reach.
  • Engage standards bodies (SBTi, GHGP, AIM Platform, TCAT) to promote accounting guidance for ETC purchases.
  • Support demand commitments for specific transactions, matching buyers to projects, assisting with due diligence, and coordinating pooled buyer commitments and advance purchase agreements.
  • Support sovereign buyer engagement to expand Articleโ€ฏ6.2 countryโ€‘toโ€‘country ETC transactions, tracking bilateral cooperation agreements.
  • Represent Kinetic Coalition at major international forums such as Climate Weeks, Ecosperity, GreenBiz, and VERGE.
  • Produce publications, case studies, and communications materials that advance ETC awareness among corporate and compliance audiences.
  • Assist fundraising efforts by contributing to grant proposals and reports.
  • Manage the Kinetic demand team, including consultants and/or interns, and mentor staff as needed.
  • Contribute to C2ES strategic planning, culture, DEIB initiatives, capacity building, and alignment of resources across Kinetic Coalition programs.
  • Participate in monthly JEDI-C meetings and complete required trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Expertise in corporate climate strategy, GHG accounting, and marketโ€‘based approaches to corporate GHG reduction, including energy attribute certificates, carbon offsets, and Energy Transition Credit frameworks.
  • Substantial experience engaging seniorโ€‘level corporate executives on sustainability strategy, climate targets, and/or carbon procurement; ability to translate technical carbon market concepts into compelling business propositions.
  • Strong understanding of scienceโ€‘based targets, netโ€‘zero commitments, and GHG inventories; knowledge of voluntary carbon market drivers.
  • Knowledge of CORSIAโ€™s Emission Unit Eligibility Criteria, Articleโ€ฏ6 of the Paris Agreement, and ITMOโ€‘related compliance schemes.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, relationship building, and business development skills; ability to cultivate and grow complex multiโ€‘stakeholder networks.
  • Excellent program and project management skills, including managing multiโ€‘year workstreams, budgets, and consultants.
  • Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Humility, collegiality, a sense of humor, and a deep spirit of collaboration.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree plus 12+ years of relevant experience, or Masterโ€™s degree in environmental management, economics, public policy, international relations, law, or related field plus 9+ years of relevant experience.
