About the Role:
Set up and operate various types of tool and cutter grinders to grind, sharpen, and form machine tools and cutters.
What You Will Do:
  • Plan operation sequence, method of grinding and/or machining and setup by an examination of the condition of the cutting tool, blueprint of part on which tool will be used if a special forming or radius cutter is required, and any other information which indicates ultimate use of the cutter
  • Work operations are variable due to number of separate determinations and adjustments required in each cycle
  • Make complete machine setup; determine, select, and mount proper size, type, and grade of grinding wheel, dress and -true wheel to shape for various radii, angles and contours
  • Select and install holding fixtures; determine, set and adjust speeds, feeds, depth of cut, and other machine adjustments
  • Perform disassembly of gang mills in order to grind, sharpen, and form cutters
  • Reassemble cutters to specifications after grinding and forming operations
  • Operate various types of tool and cutter grinding machines to perform such typical work as grinding, forming, and sharpening to specifications, such tools as broaches; special shaped or formed tool bits and boring bars (for turret-and engine lathes); circular formed tools (or formed and profile cutters); single or double angle cutters; shank angular mills; special solid gang cutters (other than a gang of plain cutters); helical and spiral cutters; hollow mills (involving two or more setups); straight and tapered reamers, drills, taps, and gauges.
  • Incidental to the duties described herein, perform silver solder brazing of carbide and other ceramic tips to various tools and cutters
  • Check finished tool for dimensions, finish, clearance, angles, contours, land, and reliefs giving consideration to the future use of the tool
  • Care and judgment must be exercised to maintain exacting angles, clearances, contours, and tolerances which usually require numerous machine adjustments
  • Preset tools for numerical control machines and broaches
  • Check purchased perishable cutting tools and accessories for conformance to specifications
  • Inspect and segregate used carbide cutting tips and repair and modify perishable tooling as assigned
  • May perform duties of a Material Mover relating to tending a tool crib and in moving cutting tools to and from machines where they are needed

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED equivalent
  • Knowledge of how to set and use gauges such as calipers, bore micrometers, dial indicators, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints for datum lines and tolerances
  • Ability to interpret GD&T
  • Understand and use of measuring devices
  • Use of advance shop math
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Willing to work any shift

Desired Qualifications:
  • Previous Machinist experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written
  • 2-3 years of previous experience

Summary Pay Range:
$23.10 - $41.25
