How does a capture director typically collaborate with business development and proposal teams during the pursuit of new contracts?

A Capture Director works closely with both business development and proposal teams to shape the overall strategy for winning new contracts. This role involves leading opportunity assessments, developing win themes, and coordinating resources to address client needs effectively. The Capture Director ensures that all stakeholders are aligned on the pursuit plan, facilitates communication between technical experts and proposal writers, and often conducts competitive analysis to refine the approach. Effective collaboration is essential, as the Capture Director acts as the central point of contact to drive the pursuit from early qualification through proposal submission.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a capture director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Capture Director, you need strong expertise in business development, proposal management, and strategic planning, often supported by experience in government contracting or sales. Familiarity with CRM tools, proposal software like Shipley or Salesforce, and knowledge of federal acquisition regulations are typically required. Outstanding leadership, negotiation, and communication skills help build client relationships and guide cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for securing new business opportunities and ensuring the success of complex, high-value capture pursuits.

Job description

Company Overview
Hybron is an advanced manufacturing company that is building lightweight composites at mass production scale. At Hybron, we have pioneered a new composites manufacturing process that enables complex, high performance composite parts to be produced 10-100 times faster than traditional manufacturing, at a fraction of the cost.
We recently closed an oversubscribed $25M seed round, are backed by the Northrop Grumman Technology Accelerator, and are rapidly growing to commercialize and mass produce composite products at a scale never seen before. Our current focus is applying our proprietary process to composite artillery shells, solid rocket motor nozzles, gas turbine engine components, and airframes.
If you want to join a rapidly growing company working on cutting edge composites technology while building capabilities for the warfighter and reshoring U.S. manufacturing, then we want to speak with you.
About the Role
This is a full-time, in-person role at our El Segundo pilot facility, with a potential DC area starting option for the first 6-12 months. As you will be working at an early-stage deep tech startup, this role will span many different tasks. You will need to be a self-starter and be adaptable to performing many different jobs. Along with these high expectations comes the opportunity to significantly influence the product development, strategy, and trajectory of a fast-growing startup company. Your work will tangibly impact our company and the composites industry, and you will be able to make rapid professional gains in an environment that encourages growth and innovation.
This role involves building the foundation of Hybron's capture program. This includes turning executive-level priorities into concrete action plans and strategic pathways, identifying and parsing through valuable strategic opportunities, managing business development efforts, owning Hybron's end-to-end business development funnel structure, shaping requirements, managing DC consultants and contractors, and creating proposals for both business-to-government (B2G) and business-to-business (B2B) contracts. You will be responsible for ensuring that the business development and capture teams are coordinated to finding and winning the best opportunities for Hybron's technology and strategic goals.
Working in a high-growth company, you will be wearing many hats: direct customer communication, requirements shaping, requirements identification, statement of work creation, cost estimation (working with operations and engineering), lobbyist and contractor management, and communication of customer needs to PMs and engineers.
Growth Opportunity and Targets
As you grow with Hybron, your responsibilities are expected to shift and evolve. Our hope is that you will be able to grow into the following responsibilities:
  • Own Hybron's most critical interactions with business and government customers.
  • Lead and grow the business development and growth teams.
  • Significantly contribute to Hybron's strategic business development plans and priorities.
  • Create and implement repeatable processes for shaping requirements, creating proposals, and winning contracts (CRM management, dividing of work, etc.).
  • Direct interactions with Congress.

What we're looking for
  • Must be a US Person pursuant to the EAR and the ITAR definitions
  • Ability to work in-person at our facility in El Segundo, with an option to start in the DC area or NYC/Picatinny Arsenal area for the first 6-12 months.
  • Technical background sufficient enough to create accurate, aggressive manufacturing- and engineering-based scopes of work that are realistic.
  • 5+ years of experience working on business development or capture for advanced manufacturing technologies (composites manufacturing, additive manufacturing, automated manufacturing, etc.)
  • 2+ years of experience working at a small business (under 500 people) or startup.
  • Experience with securing B2G contracts, with a track record of winning at least $10M in B2G contracts.
  • Experience with securing B2B, with a track record of winning at least $5M in B2B contracts.
  • Experience with working with Department of War customers and shaping requirements to support specific advanced manufacturing solutions.
  • Experience drafting full proposals from beginning to end
  • Experience drafting statements of work with clear cost and timeline breakouts.
  • A deep network of government or business customers/partners that are interested in new advanced manufacturing solutions.
  • Ability to be agile and flexible with constantly changing requirements
  • Comfortable with uncertainty, with experience managing technical risk
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a drive to deliver on ambitious schedules, even and especially if unconventional & creative solutions are necessary to do so
  • Thrives in cross-functional organizations with strong communication and collaboration.

Nice to Have
  • Engineering background in a relevant engineering or science field (Composites, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials Science, Polymer Science, etc.)
  • Experience working with consultants to shape both Hill and DoW strategy and related engagements
  • Active security clearance (SECRET or TOP SECRET)
  • Experience working in the US Military at a Program Office or Lab
  • Experience with business development in the following specific areas:
    • Lethality and munitions (Solutions that increase the lethality of warheads, artillery shells, etc.)
    • Ablatives (Solid rocket motor nozzles, etc.)
    • Structural parts/materials (composites, additive manufacturing, etc.)
    • Mass production manufacturing
    • Rapid prototyping
  • Experience with composites as a class of products
  • Demonstrated experience with growing a sustainable business development or capture team.
  • Experience with R&D project management
  • Experience with creating and presenting business cases to upper management
  • Experience with building out customer relationship management (CRM) systems

Compensation and Schedule
  • $154,000 - $249,000 per year
  • Significant stock options in the company
  • Potential additional compensation
  • Mondays - Fridays full-time
Benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Vacation - 10+ working days per year
  • Sick - 5 working days per year
  • Hybron observes US holidays with several additional days off to keep you charged
  • Daily lunches provided by the company
  • 401K with employer-matched contributions up to 4% of salary

    • Vision insurance - 95% EE, 75% DEP employer contribution
    • Life, short and long-term disability insurance - 100% company covered

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.
