Overview

The Director of Estimating is responsible for leading and managing all Modular fabrication estimating activities, ensuring accurate, competitive, and profitable cost estimates for custom metal fabrication, structural steel, modular components, and manufacturing projects. This position develops estimating policies, oversees bid strategy, and collaborates with operations, engineering, procurement, and production teams to support successful project execution.

Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements estimating policies, procedures, and best practices for fabrication and manufacturing operations.
  • Directs the preparation of detailed cost estimates for shop-fabricated products, assemblies, structural steel, piping systems, and related manufacturing services.
  • Reviews drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and customer requirements to determine labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Evaluates manufacturing methods, production schedules, and shop capabilities to ensure accurate labor and resource projections.
  • Collaborates with engineering, project management, procurement, and operations teams to develop comprehensive and competitive proposals.
  • Analyzes vendor and subcontractor quotations to ensure project costs are complete and aligned with market conditions.
  • Tracks estimated versus actual project costs and production performance to improve future estimating accuracy.
  • Identifies cost-saving opportunities and value-engineering solutions that improve competitiveness while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Monitors fabrication market trends, material pricing, and labor rates to maintain current estimating models and databases.
  • Supports strategic planning, backlog forecasting, and business development initiatives through estimating and cost analysis expertise.
  • Leads, mentors, and develops estimating personnel while establishing performance standards and professional development plans.
  • Resolves estimating-related issues and provides technical guidance during bid review and project handoff processes.ย 
QualificationsRequired Education, Experience, and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Management, or a related field OR at least 6 -10 years of progressive estimating experience within a fabrication, manufacturing, structural steel, modular construction, or industrial environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fabrication processes, manufacturing operations, cost estimating, and production planning principles.
  • Experience interpreting fabrication drawings, engineering specifications, and project scope documents.
  • Performs complex tasks typically following established processes.
  • Leads and directs the work of other employees and has full authority for personnel decisions.
  • Primarily focused on administering established policies and procedures but may have some impact on departmental budgeting, strategic planning, and procedural change.
