Region Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Anacortes, WA
Position Summary:
Based in Anacortes, WA, and reporting to the US Corporate Radiation Safety Office and the Corporate Safety Officer- Radiation Safety Officer will, manage and continuously improve existing Radiation Safety documentation, procedures, policies and management systems to meet client and regulatory requirements as outlined by the US Corporate Radiation Safety Officer. This includes advising and amending existing policy and procedure documentation, auditing programs and internal tools governing on-site and off-site Radiation Safety Program, conducting Radiation safety training and regulatory compliance activities.
The Radiation Safety Officer will work with all field teams, management teams and corporate units to inspire active participation in Radiation Safety as a culture on every level. The ideal candidate will bring a cohesive mentality to the Radiation program and serve as a subject matter expert and mentor.
Radiation Safety Officer Best Practices:
  • Monitor and understand all developments in legislation related to industry trends and evaluate the impact on operations, making recommendations for improvements where appropriate.
  • Coordinate and control audits of the Company and State policies and ensure Apave America Inc. exceeds standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide clear and thoughtful insight aimed to continuously improve existing Radiation Program structures.
  • Provide oversight over all Radiation Safety sites with control for all Radiation Safety documentation.
  • Ensure completion of all documentation with respect to incident investigation and claims management, with a strategy of proactive risk management on all sites; and
  • Provide relevant analysis of all policies, procedures and incident reporting and recommend appropriate follow-up and proactive action-planning.

Leadership& Program Development:
  • Develop and model a culture of Radiation Safety, acting as a resource to on-site and off-site for all Trainers, Radiographers, and trainees. Act as the point-of-contact for all Radiation staff and management on general safety issues in the state of Texas including all client-inquiries and requests.
  • Provide leadership and Radiation Safety expertise for all member of the Apave America Inc. team regarding the design, implementation, and administrations of all Radiation Safety related initiatives.
  • Drive the continued integration of the Apave America Inc. Radiation Safety program as a core value within the company culture.
  • Build and retain and manage a team of radiation professionals to support and deliver the ongoing improvement of the Radiation program in the State of Texas
  • Develop and participate in the ongoing training of leadership and team members in a ALARA awareness programs, meeting with staff and client contacts to review and evaluate all Radiation policies, procedures, and regulation; and
  • Identify and assist in the continued development and review of the Radiation Safety Program in the state of Texas of all procedures and documentation.

Communication and Team Relations:
  • Act as a change agent to increase the alignment and participation in Radiation Safety as a culture.
  • Build strong and effective relationships with all Apave America Inc. employees that reflects the value of Radiation Safety as part of the company culture.
  • Communicate on appropriate levels with all team members, executives, and clients to help foster a collaborative approach to Radiation Safety policy, procedure and Regulations to development and implementation.
  • Proactively educate all team members on changing Radiation Safety regulations and expectations within the all Sites and Off-Sites inside the state of Texas.
  • Skillfully negotiate all amendments through diplomatic and tactful communication to all team members and relevant client parties.

The Individual:
As this role holds responsibility for Radiation Safety operations, it is imperative that the successful candidate possess all the following criteria, efficiencies and attributes.
  • Relevant post-secondary education in Radiation Safety Officer and Source Retrieval
  • Radiographer Certification from State (or similar IRRSP/ASNT) required.
  • High School Diploma and/or Equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience with their State Carded Radiographer and/or over 3,000hrs documented in the Handling of Radioactive Equipment and/or Materials; NDT experience considered highly desirable.
  • Radiation Safety Officer experience is also highly desirable.
  • Specific experience in all nondestructive testing methods considered an asset;
  • Proven track record in leadership and change management initiatives;
  • Strong communication skills including computer and program capabilities;
  • Demonstrated experience in auditing Radiation Safety programs and understanding of regulatory skills and expectations at a State level;
  • Self-starter with a desire to be a part of a changing and collaborative Radiation Safety culture; and
  • Highly analytical and detail-oriented with a knowledge and respect for out-of-the-box solutions based on industry experience and education.
