What does a CAPA Manager do?

A CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action) Manager is responsible for overseeing an organization's CAPA process to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements. They investigate quality issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive measures to prevent recurrence. CAPA Managers work closely with cross-functional teams to improve processes, maintain regulatory compliance, and enhance overall product or service quality.

What are some common challenges a CAPA Manager faces, and how are they typically addressed?

One common challenge CAPA Managers face is ensuring timely and thorough investigations into quality issues while coordinating input from multiple departments. Balancing the need for fast resolution with the rigor required for regulatory compliance can be demanding, especially in highly regulated industries like pharmaceuticals or medical devices. Successful CAPA Managers often address these challenges through clear process documentation, effective project management, and fostering strong collaboration among stakeholders. By leveraging root cause analysis tools and maintaining open communication, they help create a continuous improvement culture that benefits both the organization and its customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Capa Manager position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CAPA Manager (Corrective and Preventive Action Manager), you typically need a background in quality assurance, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and experience with regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in a science or engineering field. Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS), risk management tools, root cause analysis methodologies (such as 5 Whys or Fishbone diagrams), and industry certifications like Six Sigma or ISO 9001 are highly valued. Outstanding candidates demonstrate excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills to effectively drive cross-functional teams and ensure timely resolution of quality issues. These skills are crucial for identifying, addressing, and preventing compliance gaps or product issues, thereby maintaining high standards and avoiding costly regulatory penalties.

  • Lead internal, customer, regulatory, and third-party audits, ensuring effective closure of findings and sustained compliance.
  • Maintain oversight of regulatory and certification requirements (e.g., ANSI, CSA, NSF, UL), ensuring standards are reflected in product and process designs.
  • Ensure customer quality performance through ownership of customer metrics, RCCA execution, and direct customer communication on quality issues.
  • Act as escalation point for customer quality spills and lead preventive action and containment activities.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering to ensure in-process quality controls, statistical analysis, capability studies, gage R&R, and equipment validation are effectively deployed.
  • Lead supplier quality strategy, including supplier assessments, audits, PPAP, SCAR management, and supplier development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and Materials Management to resolve chronic supplier quality issues and improve supplier capability and performance.
  • Own quality deliverables within the NPD and stage-gate processes, ensuring adherence to defined quality requirements at each phase.
  • Approve quality readiness for product launches and sign off on quality gates.
  • Lead Lean, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce COPQ, scrap, and variability across manufacturing operations.
  • Lead Material Review Board (MRB) activities and make product disposition decisions based on specifications and acceptance criteria.
  • Manage and control the Quality budget, ensuring effective use of resources.
  • Assume additional responsibilities and special projects as assigned by senior leadership.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • 8+ years of quality experience in a manufacturing environment, including leadership responsibility for Quality systems, people, and processes.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001, APQP, PPAP, SPC, CAPA, and regulatory/certification requirements.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Black Belt preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage change, and drive results.

General Applicable Company Competencies
  • Commitment to Watts' values of integrity, accountability, continuous improvement and innovation, and transparency.
  • Punctuality and dependability.

  • Adherence to all personnel policies, procedures, and standards of process as implemented by Watts.
  • Maintain productive and collaborative relationships with other Watts employees.
  • Adherence to Watts' seven cultural beliefs: Growth Mindset, Customer-Focused Innovation, Constant Communication, Clear Goals, Collaborate Globally, Be Inclusive, and Take Action.

Working Conditions:
