What is cannabis accounting?

A Cannabis Accounting job involves managing the unique financial and regulatory challenges of businesses in the cannabis industry. Accountants in this field handle bookkeeping, tax compliance, financial reporting, and adherence to cannabis-specific regulations like IRS Section 280E. They ensure businesses maintain accurate records, maximize deductions within legal limits, and stay compliant with state and federal laws. Due to the cash-intensive nature of the industry and banking restrictions, cannabis accountants must also navigate complex financial controls. Their expertise helps cannabis businesses remain financially healthy and legally compliant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cannabis accounting?

To thrive in Cannabis Accounting, you need a thorough understanding of accounting principles, strong attention to detail, and deep knowledge of local, state, and federal cannabis regulations—often supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Experience with industry-specific accounting software like QuickBooks or Sage, and credentials such as CPA or specialized cannabis compliance training, are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, ethical judgment, and excellent communication skills help professionals navigate regulatory complexities and work with diverse teams. These competencies are crucial to ensure financial accuracy, maintain compliance in a highly regulated industry, and support business stability in the evolving cannabis sector.

What are some unique challenges that cannabis accountants face compared to traditional accounting roles?

Cannabis Accountants often deal with complex regulatory requirements, such as strict cash management protocols and challenging tax codes like IRS Section 280E, which limits standard business deductions. They must stay up-to-date with constantly evolving state and local compliance laws, meticulously tracking transactions and maintaining comprehensive records to ensure audits go smoothly. Collaboration with legal teams, dispensary managers, and operations staff is common, as accountants work to implement processes that safeguard the business from compliance risks and financial penalties. These unique challenges make the role both dynamic and vital for the success of any cannabis-related enterprise.

Job description

The Accounting Manager plays a critical role in managing the financial operations of a cannabis cultivation business. This role involves overseeing accounting functions, budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow, payroll, and tax compliance while ensuring adherence to cannabis-specific regulations and internal controls. The Accounting Manager leads a medium to large team of accounting professionals to deliver accurate financial insights that support strategic decision-making.

Oversee all accounting and financial operations, including AP/AR, payroll, budgeting, cash flow, financial reporting, tax compliance, and internal controls. Lead and develop the accounting team while providing management with accurate financial analysis and recommendations. Manage cannabis-specific accounting and compliance requirements, including Metrc reconciliation, inventory valuation, cost accounting/COGS, production and general ledger reconciliation, month-end inventory close, variance investigation, and audit documentation. Ensure accurate tracking of raw materials, work-in-process, finished goods, and inventory adjustments while maintaining compliance with applicable cannabis financial and recordkeeping requirements.

Strongly Preferred

Previous financial leadership or senior accounting experience within the cannabis industry, with demonstrated knowledge of cannabis inventory accounting, cultivation/manufacturing costs, multi-entity operations, regulatory reporting, and cannabis-related tax considerations.

Experience within another highly regulated, inventory-intensive industry may be considered for candidates who demonstrate the ability to quickly develop expertise in cannabis-specific financial and regulatory requirements.

Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in candidates who understand that accounting within the cannabis industry extends well beyond traditional financial reporting. The successful candidate will be comfortable navigating complex entity structures, significant inventory and cost-accounting requirements, evolving regulations, and cannabis-specific tax considerations while providing executive leadership with accurate and meaningful financial information.
