What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cancer Epidemiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cancer Epidemiologist, you need a strong background in public health, biostatistics, and epidemiological research, usually supported by a master's or doctoral degree in epidemiology or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software such as SAS, R, or SPSS, and experience with large health data sets and cancer registries, are typically required. Excellent analytical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills help cancer epidemiologists effectively interpret data and work with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for identifying cancer trends, informing public health strategies, and advancing cancer prevention and control efforts.

What are some common challenges faced by cancer epidemiologists when conducting population-based research studies?

Cancer epidemiologists often encounter challenges such as collecting reliable data from diverse populations, managing large datasets, and accounting for potential confounding factors that could influence study outcomes. They must also navigate ethical considerations around patient privacy and data sharing. Additionally, coordinating multi-institutional studies and maintaining consistent methodologies across sites can be complex but are crucial for producing valid and generalizable results.

What does a Cancer Epidemiologist do?

A Cancer Epidemiologist studies the patterns, causes, and effects of cancer in populations. They conduct research to identify risk factors, track cancer incidence and survival rates, and evaluate prevention and control strategies. Their work helps inform public health policies, improve cancer prevention programs, and guide future research. Cancer Epidemiologists often collaborate with healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers to reduce the impact of cancer on communities.

Job description

A postdoctoral research associate position is open in Epidemiology & Cancer Control.
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the laboratory of Dr. Yadav Sapkota in the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Successful candidates will work on projects related to pharmacogenomics of long-term toxicities of cancer therapy in childhood cancer survivors. Specific research topics include 1) genetic association analyses (whole genome and whole exome sequence associations and polygenic risk scores) for various long-term health outcomes among survivors of European and African ancestries; 2) analyses of multi-omics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) and system genetics (e.g., eQTLs regulating molecular responses to cancer therapies in human induced pluripotent stem cells) data for elucidating molecular mechanisms for health outcomes; and 3) evaluating health disparities through pharmacogenomics. The Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control also has a T32 training grant in cancer survivorship, for which the candidate may be eligible.
The candidate will have ample, immediate opportunities to work with large-scale whole genome and whole exome sequencing, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, proteomics, and metabolomics data in a well-established cohort of childhood cancer survivors with clinically ascertained deep phenotyping of health outcomes at multiple time-points. S/he will work within a diverse, highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary research environment and interact with world leaders in the fields of cancer survivorship, genetics, stem cell pharmacogenomics, epidemiology, biostatistics, and computational biology. The successful applicant will gain extensive training and experience in genetic epidemiology and pharmacogenomics, and computational and analytical skills with full access to cutting-edge tools/technologies and shared core facilities and resources. Grant-writing training opportunities and support are also available.
St Jude Children's Research Hospital offers competitive salary, excellent benefits, and is an equal opportunity employer. To find more about our benefits for postdocs, click here.
Position qualifications:
  • PhD or equivalent degree in genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field
  • Strong publication record
  • Strong research interests in genetic epidemiology, pharmacogenomics, statistical genetics, or population genetics and experience in statistical and computational analyses of high-throughput omics data
  • Ability to code in one or more scientific programming languages (e.g., R, Python, C/C++)
  • Excellent communication and writing skills

Interested candidates are invited to complete the online application and email your CV and cover letter to Dr. Sapkota (yadav.sapkota@stjude.org).
