Job description
City of Hope Orange County is transforming cancer treatment by bringing world-class expertise and specialized care closer to home. Supported by a regional network of care, our 11-acre academic cancer campus in Irvine is home to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, our outpatient cancer center, and Orange County’s only cancer specialty hospital.
With the opening of the hospital, the full continuum of advanced cancer care—from prevention through survivorship—will be available in Orange County for the first time, eliminating the need to travel for lifesaving treatment. Seamlessly connected to our outpatient cancer center, the new clinical research hospital features 73 inpatient beds, advanced surgical suites, groundbreaking clinical trials, and holistic services such as rehabilitative therapy and spiritual care. This isn’t standard cancer care. This is lifesaving cancer care. This is Hope.
Position Summary:
The Clinical Practice Education Specialist (CPES) serves as an expert resource, educator, and change agent supporting the professional development and clinical practice of nursing staff. The CPES is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based educational programs and clinical competency activities that enhance patient outcomes, nursing practice, and the overall quality of care. This position will float to and cover other departments as needed.
As a successful candidate, you will:
- Develops, implements, and evaluates orientation, onboarding, competency validation, and ongoing professional development programs for nursing staff across ambulatory oncology, infusion, procedural, and other outpatient care settings.
- Assesses clinical education and practice needs through direct observation, competency assessment, quality and safety data, patient outcomes, regulatory requirements, and collaboration with nursing leadership and frontline clinicians; develops targeted educational strategies to address identified gaps.
- Designs, delivers, and evaluates evidence-based clinical education, including in-services, workshops, case-based learning, simulation, skills validation, and other learning modalities, to promote safe, high-quality, patient-centered oncology care.
- Serves as a clinical practice resource and educator for ambulatory oncology nursing, providing expertise in cancer treatment delivery, infusion therapy, symptom and toxicity management, patient and caregiver education, treatment-related complications, care coordination, and transitions across the cancer care continuum.
- Provides clinical consultation, mentorship, and coaching to nurses and other clinical staff to strengthen clinical judgment, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, professional development, and confidence in the management of complex oncology patients.
- Partners with nursing and interdisciplinary leaders to identify opportunities for practice improvement and leads or supports initiatives that advance patient safety, quality outcomes, clinical effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and consistency of care across ambulatory and outpatient settings.
- Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical practice changes, educational initiatives, and competency programs designed to improve patient outcomes, enhance the patient experience, support operational effectiveness, and promote staff engagement.
- Collaborates with subject matter experts, nursing leaders, physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and other interdisciplinary partners in the development, review, standardization, and dissemination of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, policies, procedures, protocols, and educational resources.
- Serves as a subject matter expert in ambulatory oncology nursing practice and supports the translation of current evidence, clinical standards, and emerging cancer treatments into frontline clinical practice.
- Promotes professional growth, specialty certification, continuing education, and lifelong learning among ambulatory nursing staff; identifies opportunities to strengthen specialty knowledge and advance professional practice.
- Develops and facilitates emergency preparedness, high-risk/low-frequency event training, mock codes, simulation-based education, and competency validation relevant to the ambulatory oncology environment.
- Uses educational, clinical, quality, safety, and performance data to evaluate the effectiveness of learning interventions and identify opportunities for continuous improvement in clinical practice and patient care.
- Participates in and contributes to professional and scholarly activities, including evidence-based practice initiatives, quality improvement, research, professional presentations, conference activities, and dissemination or publication of clinical and educational outcomes.
Your qualifications should include:
- Master’s degree in Nursing
- Current California RN license
- Minimum of three (3) years oncology experience or applicable experience in area of specialty
- Specialty Nursing Certification, ANCC Magnet-recognized certifications as updated in ANCC Demographic Data Collection Tool® (DDCT)
- Minimum of one (1) year in education (preferred)
