POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director and in accordance with the policies and guidelines of the Metro YMCA of the Oranges and American Camping Association (ACA) standards, the Health Director is expected to practice and exemplify the best practices in providing on-site health care to campers and staff. Major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: reviewing and maintaining accurate files related to camper health care needs, overseeing the administration of medications as necessary, maintaining communication with the Director and parents around camper or staff health needs and ensuring all camp health and safety procedures are followed to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.


Requirements:

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Prior to camp opening, review child health records, prepare lists of campers with medical conditions and organize and review procedures for health and emergency care.
  2. Be familiar with the American Camp Association and New Jersey State regulations related to the health and safety of all in camp. Participate actively in the maintenance and development of high standards of health and safety.
  3. Be responsible to advise camp administration when out-of-camp medical/health assistance is required/prudent/advisable.
  4. Maintain the first aid room in a clean, sanitary manner and well stocked with supplies.
  5. Keep all first aid kits appropriately stocked and serviceable.
  6. Provide complete information to staff concerning their campers, based on pre-season health forms and information provided by parents.
  7. Communicate frequently and regularly with the Camp Director. Call camper parents when necessary.
  8. Maintain accurate, specified records of all injuries, illnesses, medications and treatments administered. Data is to be kept in a bound log. Complete Incident Report forms as necessary and turn into the office.
  9. Monitor and provide supportive suggestions for health and safety in the campers’ daily program.
  10. Conduct daily spot inspection of camp facilities, and program areas, as to health, safety and cleanliness.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Skills/Knowledge:

This position requires positive interaction with children, parents and staff, and strong communication and interpersonal skills. This person must demonstrate creativity, innovation, flexibility and energy. Must have abilities to work productively with other staff to achieve the YMCA mission, goals and objectives of the Pioneer Trails Day Camp program. Experiences in leading (staff and campers) and good judgment are significant in this position, along with understanding of age specific characteristics of children and positive behavior management techniques.

2. Experience/Education:

Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. Prior experience in a youth leadership role.

3. Physical Effort and Dexterity:

Must be capable of being on your feet for long periods of time and be able to actively supervise children in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Must be capable of bending, kneeling, squatting and lifting 30 pound weight.

4. Visual Acuity, Hearing, Speaking:

Must be able to visually assess a child for illness or injury. Must be able to hear whistle or alarms. Clear speaking voice needed to command control of group.

5. ACA Accreditation Requirements:

Must complete Background Check form upon hire and any other training requirements specified by the Camp Director.
