How to intern as a photographer?
What typical responsibilities can I expect as a Camera Intern, and how much hands-on experience will I gain?
As a Camera Intern, your main responsibilities often include assisting camera operators with equipment setup and breakdown, managing cables and batteries, organizing gear, and supporting on-location or studio shoots. You will likely be given opportunities to handle cameras under supervision, observe professional filming techniques, and occasionally help with basic editing or footage logging tasks. While direct operation of main production cameras may be limited at first, proactive interns often earn increased responsibilities and valuable hands-on experience as they demonstrate reliability and eagerness to learn. The work environment is typically collaborative and fast-paced, offering many chances to interact with other crew members and learn from experienced professionals. This role provides a solid foundation for further growth in camera operation or other technical roles in film and media production.
What is a Camera Intern job?
A Camera Intern assists the camera department with setting up and operating camera equipment, maintaining gear, and supporting the crew during shoots. They may help with lighting, focus pulling, and other technical tasks to gain hands-on experience. This role provides an opportunity to learn about cinematography, equipment handling, and on-set protocols.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Camera Intern position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Camera Intern, you need a foundational understanding of camera operation, basic photography or videography concepts, and a keen eye for detail, often demonstrated through relevant coursework or a personal portfolio. Familiarity with digital cameras, stabilization equipment, and editing software such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro is highly beneficial. Strong communication, a willingness to learn, and the ability to follow directions under tight deadlines are key soft skills in this role. These attributes are crucial for supporting professional camera crews effectively, gaining hands-on industry experience, and contributing to high-quality productions.

Job description
We're looking for an intern who's equally at home on the optical bench and in a Python
notebook, eager to turn raw sensor data into real-time insight.
Working toward or holding a degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
Hands-on experience with camera hardware and basic lab instrumentation.
Understanding of intrinsic & extrinsic calibration, camera-pose estimation, and radiometric calibration.
Proficiency in Python or C++; experience deploying code on embedded/edge platforms is a plus. Interest in applying machine-learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) to imaging problems.
Strong problem-solving skills and the curiosity to dig deep into both hardware and software.
What You'll Do
Calibrate advanced cameras - derive lens intrinsics, sensor extrinsic, and radiometric response curves.
Integrate multi-sensor rigs - time-align cameras with IMUs, range finders, and custom electronics, then capture synchronized datasets.
Build edge pipelines - deploy calibration-informed perception algorithms on embedded CPUs/GPUs for live testing.
Prototype rapidly in the lab - design fixtures, script data collection, and iterate on hardware-software interactions for next-generation imaging systems.
Other Job Requirements
Due to U.S. export-control (ITAR) regulations, this position is open to U.S. persons only (citizens or lawful permanent residents).
