Job description


Human Resources is accepting applications for the School Bus Driver(s) applicant pool. Incumbents hired must first work as substitutes prior to getting a permanent assignment. Assignments are full-time (30 hours per week), split shift work schedule, NON 12-month employee
Possession of a Commercial Driver's License from the state in which the driver resides. Must have Class A/B Learners or CDL License. MUST be 21 years or older. Ability to operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner in an urban setting. Ability to supervise groups of students while driving a bus. Ability to understand directions regarding bus routes, the locations of bus stops, and the schedule of pick-up and special arrangements. Successful completion of the driver-training program offered by the Arlington Public Schools is required. Successful completion of the annual bus driver physical required by the Virginia State Board of Education is required. Must have negative test results for alcohol abuse and controlled substance use as required by the regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Must possess a satisfactory driving record that shows that: A) Within the preceding five (5) years, the driver has not been convicted of a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, has not been convicted of a felony, or has not been assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program. B) Within the preceding twelve (12) months, the driver has not been convicted of two (2) or more moving traffic violations or has not been required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
The following may not include all requirements and duties performed: Under the supervision of the Transportation Operations Manager, drivers are responsible for safely transporting groups of children to and from school following assigned routes and schedules; Drivers also may be assigned field trips, extracurricular activity runs, etc., normally within a 50-mile radius of Arlington, but occasionally to more distant locations; Drives school bus on assigned routes, picking up and discharging children at designated locations; Drives school bus to designated locations, which may vary from day to day, based on the requirements placed on the Department; When driving children with physical disabilities, may be required to assist them in boarding and leaving the bus; Maintains order on the school bus, reporting the names of unruly passengers to the appropriate school principal and to the Supervisor of Transportation; Completes checks of the condition of assigned bus before leaving the Transportation yard each day; Maintains the cleanliness of the bus and checks gas, oil and water daily; Reports any deficiencies needing repair or maintenance; Files all required reports. Complies with all laws and regulations pertaining to the operations of the school bus, observes posted speed limits, and reports any accidents or damage to the Transportation Supervisor; Notifies the Arlington Public Schools Employee Assistance Program of any therapeutic drugs that are prescribed within twenty-four (24) hours of the doctor writing the prescription.

1.0 FTE School Bus Driver salary range based off F25/26 SY Pay Plan.
