What is a Cal OSHA?

A Cal/OSHA job involves working for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA), which ensures workplace safety and health standards are followed. Employees may conduct inspections, enforce regulations, provide training, and investigate workplace hazards to protect workers. Positions range from safety engineers and inspectors to compliance officers and administrative roles.

What are some common challenges faced by Cal OSHA compliance officers?

Cal/OSHA Compliance Officers frequently navigate diverse and dynamic work environments, ranging from construction sites to manufacturing facilities, where conditions and hazards can vary widely. One common challenge is ensuring that employers and employees understand and adhere to complex safety regulations, which may require clear communication and ongoing education efforts. Compliance Officers must also stay current with evolving regulations and best practices, balancing thorough inspections with timely reporting. Collaborating with employers, employees, and sometimes legal professionals, these officers play a key role in fostering safer workplaces while managing potentially sensitive situations diplomatically.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cal OSHA position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cal/OSHA (California Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Compliance Officer, you need a solid understanding of occupational safety regulations, hazard identification, and investigative procedures, typically backed by relevant education or experience in safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field. Familiarity with Cal/OSHA standards, inspection protocols, and regulatory compliance management systems—often aided by specialized certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional)—is essential. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills enable effective interaction with diverse workplaces and clear reporting. These skills are vital for ensuring workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and the promotion of a culture of health and safety across industries.

Job description

Description

Are you a Safety Manager who thrives both behind the scenes and in the field? At HELIX Environmental Planning, we're looking for a dynamic Safety Manager who can build strong programs, influence culture, and help keep our employees safe wherever their work takes them. This is a unique opportunity for a hands-on Safety Manager who enjoys developing policies and training programs just as much as conducting field audits, visiting jobsites, and engaging directly with employees. The Safety Manager reports to the Human Resources Director and plays a key leadership role in strengthening HELIX's positive safety culture.

Why HELIX?

HELIX Environmental Planning is an employee-focused environmental consulting firm known for its collaborative culture, technical excellence, and commitment to supporting our people. As our Safety Manager, you'll have the opportunity to make a visible impact across the organization, partnering with employees at all levels while helping shape the future of our safety program. This position is based in Southern California and offers hybrid work options after the initial 60-90 day onboarding period.

Day in the Life

One day, you're visiting jobsites, conducting safety observations, coaching field teams, and identifying opportunities to improve safety performance. The next, you're updating health and safety policies, developing training content, and completing safety documentation for proposals and client requirements. As a trusted Safety Manager, you'll work closely with leadership, project teams, and employees to create a culture where safety is integrated into everything we do.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and manage all aspects of HELIX's Safety Program.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies and procedures.
  • Create and deliver corporate and field safety training programs.
  • Conduct new-hire safety orientations.
  • Perform regular field audits, safety inspections, and jobsite observations.
  • Lead safety committee meetings and track corrective actions.
  • Assist with project-specific safety plans, JHAs, and work plans.
  • Support proposal and contract teams by completing safety questionnaires and documentation.
  • Manage safety records, reporting, KPIs, and program effectiveness metrics.
  • Maintain third-party safety platforms such as ISNetworld and Avetta.
  • Oversee workers' compensation claims, investigations, and injury prevention efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations.
  • Provide safety updates and recommendations to company leadership.

Salary will be based on qualifications and/or experience, with a robust benefits package. Expected starting pay range of $110,000 to $150,000.

Ready to Lead Safety at HELIX?

If you're a proactive Safety Manager who enjoys balancing strategy, training, compliance, and field engagement, we'd love to hear from you. Join HELIX and help us build an even stronger safety culture while supporting meaningful projects throughout California. Apply today and bring your expertise, leadership, and passion for safety to HELIX Environmental Planning.

HELIX is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and an inclusive work environment. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply regardless of gender, race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), parental status, national origin, disability, age, genetic information (including family medical history), political affiliation, military service or veteran status. These protections extend to all management practices and decisions, including recruitment and hiring, appraisal systems, promotions, training, and career development programs.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of health and safety experience in construction, engineering, environmental consulting, or a related industry.
  • 1+ year of professional safety experience in California with working knowledge of Cal/OSHA requirements.

  • Experience developing and delivering safety training programs.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to regularly travel throughout Southern California and occasionally Northern California.
  • Valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Safety Engineering, Safety Management, or related field.
  • Bilingual Spanish language skills.
  • Workers' compensation claims management experience.
  • ISNetworld administration experience.
  • First Aid/CPR Instructor certification.
