What are some typical challenges a Caddie Manager faces when coordinating caddie assignments during busy golf tournaments?

A Caddie Manager often encounters challenges such as balancing caddie availability with player requests, ensuring fair distribution of assignments, and handling last-minute changes due to weather or cancellations. Effective communication and quick problem-solving are essential, especially during peak times when multiple groups require support. Additionally, managing the expectations of both caddies and golfers while maintaining a smooth operation is a key part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Caddie Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Caddie Manager, you need strong organizational skills, in-depth knowledge of golf operations, and experience managing teams, often supported by prior work in hospitality or golf course management. Familiarity with scheduling software, POS systems, and golf course management platforms is typically required. Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, and conflict resolution skills help you effectively coordinate caddies and deliver high-quality service to golfers. These competencies ensure smooth day-to-day operations, satisfied clientele, and a well-managed caddie staff.

What are Caddie Managers?

Caddie Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the operations of caddie programs at golf courses or country clubs. Their duties include recruiting, training, and scheduling caddies, ensuring excellent service for golfers, and handling administrative tasks related to caddie payroll and performance. They also act as a liaison between caddies, golfers, and club management to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and resolve any issues that arise. Effective Caddie Managers help enhance the golfing experience and maintain high standards of service.

Responsibilities/Expectations of the Caddie/Outside Service Manager:
1. Understand the game of golf and have knowledge of the rules and etiquette of the game.
2. Maintain an adequate pool of well-trained caddies and bag room employees.
3. Train new caddies as to the rules of golf and duties to be performed while on the golf course. An effective training program including printed and video materials as well as on-course must be utilized.
4. Make sure that caddies are available to all golfers, giving equal opportunity to all caddies.
5. We use a program called Club Up for assigning caddies so that our caddies can better maintain their own schedules. It is the Caddie/Bag Room Manager’s responsibility to learn this software and utilize it to properly load and assign caddies.
6. Work with the golf professional to determine the number of caddies needed for special high-demand events (i.e. club tournaments and Monday outings).
7. Evaluate caddie performance aided by members’ comments and caddie evaluations through Club Up.
