What is a CADD manager?

CADD Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the use and implementation of Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) systems within an organization. They manage CADD teams, maintain software and hardware, develop standards and workflows, and provide training to staff. CADD Managers ensure that design projects are completed efficiently, accurately, and according to industry or company standards. Their leadership is crucial for integrating new technologies and optimizing design processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CADD manager?

To thrive as a CADD Manager, you need expertise in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), a strong background in engineering or architecture, and relevant experience with CADD standards and workflows. Proficiency with software like AutoCAD, Revit, and MicroStation, along with knowledge of project management systems and industry certifications, is highly valuable. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help distinguish successful CADD Managers as they coordinate teams and ensure quality deliverables. These skills ensure efficient project execution, high-quality design outputs, and seamless collaboration between technical staff and stakeholders.

What are some common challenges a CADD manager faces when overseeing multiple projects and how can they be addressed?

CADD Managers often juggle multiple projects with varying deadlines and requirements, which can lead to challenges in resource allocation, maintaining drawing standards, and ensuring effective communication among team members. To address these issues, it is important to implement standardized workflows, regularly train the team on best practices, and use project management tools that provide visibility into project status and workloads. Proactive communication with project leads and regular check-ins can also help to identify and resolve bottlenecks early, ensuring projects stay on track and maintain quality standards.

What is the difference between Cadd Manager vs Civil Engineer?

AspectCadd ManagerCivil Engineer

Job Description

With high-level goals provided, prepares basic to highly complex intelligent models, details, and/or general arrangement drawings through proper translation of level of design (LOD); prepares drawings and sketches of unusual, complex, or original designs requiring the application of predominantly practical engineering knowledge. On transit and multimodal projects, coordinates and integrates intelligent models across all design disciplines — architecture, vertical structures, transportation structures, roadway design, and MEP — into federated, clash-checked, deliverable-ready models.

  • Cross-discipline coordination — Serves as the firm's go-to Intelligent Modeling Coordinator for transit and multimodal projects, coordinating deliverables across architecture, vertical structures, transportation structures, roadway design, and MEP into a single federated, clash-checked model throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Model coordination & clash detection — Runs clash detection in Navisworks and leads resolution across disciplines, catching conflicts early rather than in late-stage design or construction.
  • Standards & governance — Establishes, documents, and enforces CADD/BIM standards, templates, and workflows across offices, built on the Autodesk stack and compliant with governing transit agency and DOT design criteria.
  • Mentorship & guidance — Provides lower-level modeling personnel with design sketches for preparation of finished design drawings and general layouts, and guidance in refining technical requirements; mentors and trains production staff across offices to build a repeatable, institutional capability.
  • Acts as Intelligent Modeling Coordinator for basic to highly complex projects during the project lifecycle to ensure coordination between the design team.
  • Performs crosscheck of drawings to ensure consistency of drawings, cross sections, section placement, and layering guidelines, and adherence to the firm's Q/QC standards.
  • Performs CADD/technical support tasks such as verifying intelligent model integrity, managing model health and versioning, and maintaining interoperability across the Autodesk toolset (and Bentley where projects require it).
  • Reviews manufacturers' or fabricators' prints for aid in design documents.
  • Determines material needs and performs necessary calculations using accepted formulas and references per the firm's standards.
  • Establishes design criteria for assigned phases of a project requiring the application of engineering principles, material properties, and familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.
  • Provides general conceptual input to projects during the planning stages and supports or leads field assignments as required.
  • Develops BIM Execution Plans, contributes to model-based deliverable scoping, and advises pursuit teams on integration approach, LOD, and production level of effort (LOE).
  • Interfaces with clients, agencies, and subconsultants on model deliverable requirements, coordination expectations, and data handoff standards.
  • Performs related fundamental engineering support tasks such as plotting drawings, preparing transmittals and overnight packages, file management, filing and distributing prints, assisting in simple design calculations, and coordinating specifications with drawings.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Skills & Abilities
  • Cross-discipline coordination — Demonstrated ability to coordinate intelligent models across multiple design disciplines — architecture, vertical structures, transportation structures, roadway design, and MEP. This is the central skill for the role.
  • Agency & DOT standards — Strong working knowledge of transit agency design standards and DOT design standards, and the ability to build and enforce CADD/BIM standards that comply with them.
  • Software fluency — Advanced working knowledge of intelligent modeling / CADD drafting commands and solid working knowledge of intelligent modeling technologies, with expert-level fluency in the Autodesk stack (Civil 3D / AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks) as the primary production and coordination environment.
  • Good communication skills with strict attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a flexible team player who adapts to changing requirements.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and influence production staff across geographies and offices.
  • Software experience in the use of Microsoft Office for design-related tasks.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent with vocational technical training in basic CADD drafting technology and intelligent modeling.
  • 12 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Transit project experience — Experience on transit-specific projects (BRT, LRT/rail, station and platform design, transit facilities).
  • Agency & DOT standards — Direct familiarity with specific transit agency and DOT CADD/BIM standards and deliverable requirements (e.g., MARTA, MBTA, MTA, DART, CTA, and state DOTs such as GDOT, Caltrans, IDOT, TDOT, PennDOT).
  • Bentley cross-platform capability — Working knowledge of the Bentley stack (MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer) for projects and agencies that mandate it — a strong bonus, not a substitute for Autodesk fluency.
  • Experience authoring BIM Execution Plans and model-based deliverable scoping.
  • Working knowledge of related tools and data-management platforms (Synchro, Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360, ProjectWise).
  • Prior role as a firm- or region-wide CADD/BIM resource supporting multiple offices.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating intelligent models across multiple disciplines (architecture, vertical/transportation structures, roadway, and MEP) on transportation or multimodal projects.
