What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cable engineer?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals in cable engineering, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Cable Engineering vs Cable Technician?
| Aspect | Cable Engineering | Cable Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field; certifications like Cisco or BICSI often preferred | High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications or on-the-job training |
| Work Environment | Design offices, project sites, and planning environments | Fieldwork on installation, maintenance, and repair sites |
| Job Focus | Designing and planning cable systems, overseeing installation projects | Installing, troubleshooting, and repairing cable systems |
| Industry Usage | Used by telecom companies, network providers, and construction firms | Primarily employed by telecom and cable service providers |
While both roles involve working with cable systems, Cable Engineers focus on designing and planning cable infrastructure, requiring higher education and design skills. Cable Technicians handle installation and maintenance tasks in the field, often with technical certifications. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description
Peraton is seeking a skilled Voice and Cable Engineer to support the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) enterprise infrastructure program. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert responsible for the architecture, design, and engineering of structured voice and cabling systems across DOE facilities, while also providing technical oversight for network infrastructure projects. This position requires the application of independent engineering judgment to define cable specifications, design cabling schemas, solve complex infrastructure challenges, and ensure that all installations meet federal standards and future capacity requirements. The Voice and Cable Engineer exercises discretion in evaluating site conditions, selecting optimal routing solutions, and making real-time technical decisions that impact enterprise network performance and reliability. This position is ideal for a technically proficient professional who combines hands-on expertise with engineering design and problem-solving capabilities in a mission-driven federal environment.
Responsibilities
Cabling Architecture, Design & Engineering
- Architect and design structured cabling solutions for DOE facilities, including pathway routing, cable plant topology, and capacity planning to support current and future network requirements.
- Define cable specifications and standards for enterprise deployments, evaluating and selecting appropriate media types (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, single-mode fiber, multi-mode fiber) based on performance requirements, distance limitations, and environmental factors.
- Develop cabling schemas and infrastructure blueprints, including logical and physical layer designs, to support data center, campus, and building-level connectivity.
- Exercise independent engineering judgment to assess site conditions, resolve design conflicts, and determine optimal installation approaches that balance performance, cost, and schedule constraints.
- Perform technical problem-solving for complex cabling challenges, including analysis of signal degradation, interference mitigation, and pathway obstructions that require creative engineering solutions.
- Pull, route, dress, and terminate copper (twisted pair) and fiber optic cabling in accordance with applicable standards and site-specific requirements.
- Terminate and test Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic cables (single-mode and multi-mode) including connectors, patch panels, and wall plates.
- Perform fiber splicing, polishing, and end-face inspection using industry-standard tools and equipment.
- Conduct cable testing and certification using tools such as Fluke DSX or similar cable analyzers; analyze test results, diagnose failures, and develop remediation strategies.
- Design and specify cable tray layouts, conduit pathways, J-hook configurations, and other cable management infrastructure based on site-specific engineering assessments.
- Coordinate with facilities, construction, network architects, and government stakeholders to plan and execute cabling projects; provide technical recommendations and engineering trade-off analyses to inform project decisions.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation including as-built drawings, cable schedules, design specifications, and labeling schemas in accordance with DOE standards.
- Conduct site surveys and feasibility assessments for new infrastructure projects; provide engineering recommendations on cabling approaches, materials, and labor requirements.
- Adhere to all site safety requirements, including working in raised floor environments, above ceiling spaces, and data center facilities.
Education Requirements
Minimum of 0 years with BS/BA; Minimum of 4 years with High School Diploma
Required Qualifications
- Must be a US Citizen
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance
- Demonstrated experience in cabling system architecture, design, and engineering in an enterprise or federal environment
- Proficiency in designing and specifying copper and fiber optic cabling solutions, including media selection, pathway engineering, and capacity planning
- Ability to exercise independent engineering judgment in evaluating site conditions, resolving design conflicts, and making technical decisions
- Experience reading, interpreting, and creating floor plans, network diagrams, cabling schemas, and engineering specifications
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure challenges
- Experience with cable testing and certification equipment; ability to analyze results and develop remediation strategies
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to clean, organized, and properly documented installations
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work on ladders, and operate in confined or above-ceiling spaces
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with fiber cable design and engineering
- BICSI RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) or BICSI Installer 2 certification
- CompTIA Network+ or equivalent networking certification
- Experience supporting federal government or DOE facilities
- Familiarity with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools and design methodologies
- Experience with outside plant (OSP) fiber design and installation
- Knowledge of network switching, patching, and infrastructure integration
- Experience developing cabling standards and specifications for enterprise environments
