How much do cnc laser programming jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc laser programming in the United States is $21.78, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.75 and $23.32 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges CNC laser programmers face when transitioning from other CNC roles?

CNC Laser Programmers often encounter unique challenges when moving from general CNC machining or milling roles, such as adapting to the intricacies of laser technology, material behavior under laser cutting, and the importance of optimizing cutting paths for efficiency. Unlike traditional machining, laser programming requires a deeper understanding of heat effects, kerf width, and material-specific settings. Additionally, mastering specialized software for laser cutting and collaborating closely with design engineers to interpret complex CAD drawings are key aspects. Embracing continuous learning and open communication with operators and maintenance teams can help ease the transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC laser programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Laser Programmer, you need a solid understanding of CNC machinery, technical drawing interpretation, and experience with manufacturing processes, often supported by relevant technical training or an associate degree. Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and familiarity with laser cutting machines are essential technical requirements. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure precise, efficient production and minimize errors, which are critical for maintaining quality and meeting production deadlines.

What is the difference between Cnc Laser Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Laser ProgrammingCnc Machinist
CredentialsTechnical training, certifications in laser systemsTechnical training, machining certifications
Work EnvironmentLaser cutting shops, manufacturing facilitiesMachine shops, manufacturing plants
Job FocusProgramming laser cutters for precise cutsOperating and setting up various CNC machines
Tools & SkillsCAD/CAM software, laser operationManual machining, CNC machine operation

While both roles involve CNC technology, Cnc Laser Programming specializes in creating programs for laser cutting machines, focusing on software and precision. Cnc Machinists operate a variety of CNC machines, including mills and lathes, with a broader focus on machine setup and manual adjustments. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right career path in manufacturing technology.

What is CNC laser programming?

CNC laser programming involves creating and optimizing computer instructions that control laser cutting machines. These programs tell the laser where to move, when to cut, and how fast to operate, ensuring precise and efficient material processing. CNC laser programmers typically use CAD and CAM software to design parts and generate the necessary machine code. This role is crucial in industries like manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace, where accuracy and repeatability are essential.

Job description

About Apex Laser

Precision, speed, and quality are the heartbeat of Apex Laser. We build high‑tolerance parts from steel, aluminum, and stainless for diverse industries, and we do it in a fast, innovative shop where ideas quickly become finished components.

Role: CNC Laser Cutting Programmer-Operator

Imagine starting your shift with a hot coffee and a clear plan. You scan the queue, load the next job, and nest parts to minimize scrap. You dial in gas pressure, focal offset, and cut speeds, then watch the first part glide free—clean edges, tight tolerances, zero burr. While the machine hums, you’re already staging the next sheet, reading prints, and double‑checking specs so there’s no wasted motion. When a cut line flares or a pierce hesitates, you troubleshoot on the fly and keep production flowing.

What you’ll do
  • Program and operate industrial CNC laser cutters to produce precision parts from steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and customer specifications with complete accuracy.
  • Optimize performance by adjusting gas pressure, focal point, and feed rates; resolve errors and cut defects quickly.
  • Plan ahead by staging materials, nesting, and sequencing work to reduce downtime in a fast-paced environment.
  • Handle materials safely using a forklift and manual lifts for loading/unloading sheets and finished parts.
  • Verify quality with meticulous inspections to ensure parts meet strict standards before they move downstream.
What makes you a great fit
  • Proven background operating and programming industrial laser cutting equipment.
  • Technical fluency with machine controls and parameter tuning; confident blueprint and print-reading skills.
  • Troubleshooter’s mindset—you anticipate, prevent, and solve issues before they become delays.
  • Physical readiness to lift heavy materials and safely run a forklift (certification preferred or willing to certify).
  • Clear communicator—strong written and verbal communication with teammates and across departments.
  • Detail obsessed—because “close enough” isn’t in your vocabulary.
Compensation and stability
  • Competitive Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour based on experience.
  • Stability: Full-time hours in a growing, state-of-the-art facility, with overtime opportunities available.
How to apply

Ready to keep production seamless? Send your resume and a brief note about your laser cutting experience to info@apex-laser.com or apply directly through this platform.

Machines and technologies you’ll use
  • CNC Laser Cutter (Mitsubishi, Mazak, Trumpf, Amada, Cincinnati, Bystronic, Prima-Power, Hankwang)
