Both roles require similar qualifications, but their work environments and objectives differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Buy Side Research Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Buy Side Research Analyst, you need strong financial analysis abilities, proficiency in valuation techniques, and typically a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with Bloomberg, FactSet, Excel modeling, and possibly the CFA designation is highly valued. Exceptional critical thinking, communication, and attention to detail help analysts generate actionable insights and present findings persuasively. These skills are crucial for making informed investment recommendations that drive portfolio performance and manage risk effectively.

How does a Buy Side Research Analyst typically interact with portfolio managers and traders during the investment process?

Buy Side Research Analysts collaborate closely with portfolio managers and traders to identify investment opportunities and inform decision-making. Analysts conduct in-depth research and analysis on potential investments, presenting their findings and recommendations in meetings or reports. They often field questions and provide real-time updates as new information emerges, ensuring portfolio managers have the insights needed for timely, informed trades. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as analysts' insights directly influence portfolio construction and performance.

What are Buy Side Research Analysts?

Buy Side Research Analysts are financial professionals who work for investment management firms, such as mutual funds, hedge funds, or pension funds. Their primary responsibility is to analyze companies, industries, and markets to help their firm make informed investment decisions. Unlike sell side analysts who produce research for clients and the public, buy side analysts use their research exclusively to benefit their firm's investment portfolio. They often build financial models, attend company meetings, and generate investment ideas to maximize returns. Their work is critical in shaping the firm's asset allocation and investment strategies.

Job description

Ariel Investments is a premier, boutique, asset management firm. Our primary goal is to drive exceptional investment returns by bringing diverse perspectives together. The only way to beat a benchmark is to not look like one. As value investors, our thinking is deliberate and unconventional. We offer an independent, patient investing approach and aim to deliver excellence in any environment. We uphold our fiduciary responsibility to every shareholder, no matter how big or small.
At Ariel, we strongly believe that teamwork yields results-which is why we have Co-CEOs. John W. Rogers, Jr. and Mellody Hobson share a desire to cultivate leaders who are curious, focused and disciplined. We are nimble and efficient. Our drive is fanatical and intentional. Everyone plays their position, and each contribution is critical to our firm's success. We seek subject matter experts who are unapologetically themselves. We encourage our employees to reach their full potential and we give them the runway to do so.
After four decades of active investing, we remain committed to our clients, our teammates and our community. We strive to be best-in-class investors and pioneer a path for those who entrust us with their financial future.
Who we're looking for:
A buy-side research analyst with a proven track record of strong investment performance within their specialty, covering companies globally. The role requires solid fundamental research capabilities, advanced financial modelling skills, clear communication of their investment thesis and accountability for recommendations. A background in value investing is important. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate with a strong record of academic and professional excellence, natural curiosity, and a willingness to engage in thoughtful debates within a team-based decision-making environment.
The team:
The International and Global team covers three global large-cap value strategies across both US and non-US markets. Our investment philosophy is rooted in identifying companies with attractive and sustainable returns relative to risk where consensus is overly concerned with a controversy. We focus on inflecting fundamentals and strive to capitalize on price dislocations and market inefficiencies to drive long-term capital appreciation. A disciplined approach to valuation is critical to success.
Each person plays a defined role, and each contributes to the firms' success. We seek subject matter experts who are unapologetically themselves and we support employees to reach their full potential by offering a runway to do so.
Position Summary
Our analysts are the primary source for idea generation. You will conduct bottom-up fundamental stock selection, driven by proprietary research.
You will be fully integrated into the investment process and responsible for identifying and analyzing equity securities that align with investment goals.
Investment recommendations will be assessed relative to your sector.
This position is an integral member of team where you will work closely with fellow analysts, portfolio managers and the CIO. The position will report to the Chief Investment Officer of Global and Emerging Markets and is based in our midtown Manhattan offices.
Some travel is required.
Experience and Qualifications
  • At least 7+ years of relevant work experience (sell side research, buy side research, investment banking, consulting, corporate strategy, tech engineering)
  • At least 5 years of buy-side investment experience
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to articulate an investment thesis and ability to interact with senior management of companies in coverage area
  • Strong financial modeling skills are a minimum requirement
  • Detail orientation and the ability to consume, digest and synthesize a large amount of information from a variety of sources and convert them into proprietary, actionable insights in a timely fashion, is a prerequisite to succeed in this position.
  • We highly value the ability to identify factors such as competitive advantage, strategic inflection points or disruptive developments as well as the ability to synthesize and articulate these fundamental characteristics both qualitatively in a thesis write-up and quantitatively in a financial/valuation model.

Education
  • Bachelor's or master's degree.
  • MBA and/or CFA a plus

Technical Proficiency Requirements
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Bloomberg
  • Visible Alpha, preferred not required
  • S&P Cap IQ, preferred not required

Compensation
The base salary range for this role is $140,000 - $185,000.
Compliance:

Equal Opportunity Employer / Diversity:
Ariel celebrates diversity and practices inclusion as a way to get work done - it's in our DNA. As an equal opportunity employer, employment decisions are based on business needs, job requirements and individual qualifications without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, ancestry, marital status, parental status (including pregnancy), disability, perceived disability, veteran status, status of military discharge, or any other basis under federal, state, or local law. Ariel prohibits discrimination against an applicant or employee because of their actual or perceived protected characteristic(s), and is committed to recruiting, retaining, and developing a diverse group of talented applicants, and to providing employees with a workplace free from discrimination and/or harassment.
