What does a business professor do?

A business professor teaches business topics to undergraduate or graduate students. In this role, your job duties include planning courses, delivering lectures, assigning papers and projects, and administering exams. You also offer office hours to students to need additional assistance or who have questions outside of class. Schools that offer a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) program have many business professors on staff. Postsecondary business teachers can also work at undergraduate universities, community colleges, and technical schools. Tenured professors are expected to conduct extensive research on current business trends and other topics relevant to the field and publish articles and papers. Some adjunct professors teach part-time and still work professionally in the business world.

How do business professors typically balance teaching, research, and service responsibilities within their institutions?

Business Professors often juggle a combination of teaching courses, conducting academic research, and participating in service activities such as committee work or advising student organizations. The balance between these duties can vary by institution, but most universities expect faculty to contribute to all three areas. Effective time management and clear communication with department colleagues are essential, as professors may need to coordinate group projects, publish research, and mentor students simultaneously. Collaboration with other faculty and industry partners is also common, supporting both research initiatives and curriculum development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business professor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Professor, you need an advanced degree (typically a PhD or DBA) in business or a related field, along with a strong foundation in business theory and research. Familiarity with learning management systems (such as Canvas or Blackboard), statistical analysis software, and academic publishing platforms is essential. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and classroom management skills help foster student engagement and academic growth. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality education, advancing research, and preparing future business leaders.
