Our mission at Umba is to use machine learning to allow us to create intelligent, affordable financial products for emerging markets.
Umba launched into the Kenyan market in November 2018, and offers a number of digital banking products to its users through an Android App.
This platform uses machine learning and big data to build credit scores to optimize risk exposures and allows users to apply, receive and repay microloans and through their smartphone.
Once a user creates an account we validate their information and make lending decisions based on the information they give us and hundreds of data points we take from their smartphone with their permission.
Our machine learning models are in a state of constant improvement and we use AI and automation to deliver the lowest cost banking solutions for our growing customer base. We have built out a large data collection platform, with our data warehouse storing over 100m rows of data for accurate credit scoring.
Job Description
Umba is looking for an Operations Intern to join our team. We are seeking an individual who can perform various duties related to operations. The intern will be exposed to a great deal of challenging experiences that align with a startup that is scaling rapidly. Under the supervision of an assigned Manager, this position will be responsible for assisting with a range of operation roles within the business. The intern is expected to work no more than 24 hours a week and will be paid $15/hour.
This position will include the following responsibilities:
โ€ข Participates in special projects to support the companies goals.
โ€ข Develops and maintains positive business relationships with associates.
โ€ข Provides administrative support for day-to-day business activities for the assigned department.
โ€ข Interacts with the team to provide support, gather information, and prepare all materials related to presentations, spreadsheets, correspondence, etc.
โ€ข Assists in the definition of project scope and objectives.
โ€ข Maintains confidential and specialized files, documents, and records.
โ€ข Completes other duties as assigned.
Education
โ€ข Bachelor's degree
โ€ข Preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher.

โ€ข Strong written and verbal communications skills.
