Job description

Purpose
The Business Development Manager plays a critical role in driving growth and positioning TEU as a leader in a variety of markets. This role is responsible for identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities; strengthening client relationships; and providing market intelligence to inform strategic decision-making. The position works closely with senior leadership, estimating, operations, and marketing teams to ensure alignment with company goals and consistent execution of business development practices.
Focus & Scope
Essential duties and responsibilities, i.e. those which are basic, necessary, and an integral part of the job, are indicated below:
 
  1. Strategic Market Development
  1. Identify and pursue new lines of business, client prospects, and market sectors aligned with company growth objectives.
  2. Develop, maintain, and expand relationships with current and potential clients, consultants, and industry partners to generate repeat business and referrals.
  3. Create and maintain an annual business development plan in partnership with the VP & General Manager that supports specific markets and TEU business goals; update regularly to reflect progress and market changes.
  4. Partner with VP & General Manager to integrate the business development plan into the overall divisional business strategy.
 
  1. Client Relationship Management
  1. Build strong, long-term relationships with clients, architects/engineers, subcontractors, and community organizations to enhance client satisfaction and loyalty.
  2. Drive client relationship accountability through development of account and zipper plans.
  3. Serve as a liaison between internal teams, attending meetings, addressing client concerns, and ensuring smooth communication and project understanding.
  4. Plan and participate in networking, pre-bid, and social events to strengthen the Company's presence in the market.
 
  1. Opportunity & Pipeline Management
  1. Qualify opportunities early in the business development process and manage the opportunity pipeline to ensure timely pursuit of high value projects.
  2. Track competitors' capabilities and maintain updated competitor profiles.
  3. Maintain accurate and complete information in the company's CRM system, including capture plans, call reports, white papers, debriefs, and client intelligence.
  4. Ensure timely submittal of market and customer data for annual forecasting survey.
 
  1. Proposal & Pursuit Strategy
    1. Collaborate with Estimating and operations to develop winning pursuit strategies.
    2. Direct the preparation of proposals, presentations, and other client-facing materials to ensure quality, consistency, and alignment with client needs.
    3. Provide market research, customer feedback, and post-job evaluations to improve proposal strategies and day-to-day business development processes.
    4. Assist management in determining markup strategies for bids.
 
  1. Market Research & Brand Positioning
  1. Monitor industry trends, client needs, and competitor activities to identify strategic opportunities and potential risks.
  2. Promote and protect the company's reputation in the community through consistent communication, ethical business practices, and active involvement in industry associations and trade groups.
  3. Collaborate across business units to standardize business development practices, customer service expectations, and market positioning strategies.
 
  1. Internal Collaboration & Compliance
    1. Work across disciplines and business units to ensure alignment on opportunities, client priorities, and market trends.
    2. Support the company's values, including diversity, teamwork, and respect, to maintain a positive and collaborative work environment.
    3. Ensure adherence to policies procedures, and standards to protect the company's interests.
    4. Complete internal documentation, logs, files, and reports related to business development activities.

    1. Promote the company's zero-injury culture by participating in safety meetings and maintaining a safe work environment.
    2. Actively represent the company in community and industry organizations to strengthen relationships and promote the brand.

Role Qualifications & Requirements            
Education:      
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience
Experience & Industry Expertise:     
  • 5-10 years' experience in business development, construction, or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience
  • Basic understanding of the construction industry is desired.
Specific Job Requirements:
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug, alcohol, and background investigation
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Demonstrated ability to lead with executive presence, influence, and credibility across all levels of the organization
  • Current on all company required safety training
  • Ability to preserve confidential and proprietary information and successfully avoid conflicts-of-interest
  • Ability to learn TEU processes and procedures of business aspects and customer relations within one to two years of employment
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and other variables for proposing action plans and forecasting future business
  • Possesses a strong working knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office with emphasis on spreadsheet applications

Equipment Used, Physical Demands, and Work Environment
Equipment Used:      
  • General office equipment, telephone, automobile, personal protective equipment (safety glasses, hearing protection, gas detection equipment) when visiting utility construction sites and substations.
Physical Demands & Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Physical:  Sitting for long periods working on computer or attending meetings. Utility site visits require walking on uneven ground, around energized equipment, and exposure to extreme temperature and/or humidity. Some lifting of materials and equipment up to 50 lbs. Ability to work around utility infrastructure including gas lines and electrical equipment.
  1. Work Environment:  Typical office environment with adequate temperatures and lighting, low levels of noise. Demands of meeting tight utility project deadlines and regulatory timelines. Exposed to utility construction site conditions which can include loud noise, dust, fumes, energized electrical equipment, natural gas facilities, and extreme weather conditions. May work various hours including emergency response situations, early mornings, evenings, and weekends during utility outages or critical infrastructure projects.

BASE SALARY RANGE:
$185,167.00 - $259,233.00
The range displayed reflects the range the company reasonable expects to pay for the position. The actual base salary is subject to variation due to the role, level, geographic location, relevant education, training, or experience, among other factors.
