Job description

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Business Development Associate / Manager to help expand a growing global medical and scientific communications organization in the United States.

The organization works with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medtech, and healthcare organizations across complex therapeutic areas, supporting clients across the medical and scientific communications landscape from launch through post-launch.

With an established international presence and a growing client base across the United States and Europe, this is an opportunity for a commercially driven professional to play an important role in expanding the organization's U.S. presence.

We are specifically looking for someone who understands medical communications and the life sciences industry and who can combine that knowledge with proven B2B business development ability.

This is not a general sales position. The successful candidate should be comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders across functions such as Medical Information, Medical Affairs, Medical Excellence, and Medical Communications, understanding their needs, identifying opportunities, and positioning specialized scientific and medical solutions as valuable business partners.

About the Role

This is a California-based remote and field-oriented position.

The successful candidate will work remotely from a professional home office while also being expected to build relationships in the field through in-person client meetings, industry conferences, congresses, networking events, and relevant scientific meetings.

Candidates must currently be based in California.

California is particularly important for this position because of its concentration of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medtech, and life sciences organizations.

This role will involve business development across the broader U.S. and European markets, so the ability to engage professionally with clients and senior stakeholders across different markets is important.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generate and develop new business opportunities across pharmaceutical, emerging biotech, medtech, and healthcare organizations.
  • Conduct targeted, value-led outreach to stakeholders within Medical Information, Medical Affairs, Medical Excellence, and Medical Communications departments.
  • Research target organizations, identify relevant stakeholders, and develop strategic account engagement plans.
  • Build and maintain a qualified business development pipeline.
  • Position the organization as a strategic partner across the medical information and medical affairs value chain.
  • Develop relationships with senior decision-makers and key stakeholders within prospective client organizations.
  • Arrange and lead qualified exploratory meetings with senior stakeholders.
  • Understand prospective clients' business, medical, and scientific communication needs and identify relevant opportunities.
  • Develop and execute account engagement strategies designed to generate business growth and establish long-term partnerships.
  • Represent the organization at industry conferences, congresses, networking events, and relevant scientific meetings.
  • Build meaningful relationships through both virtual engagement and face-to-face interaction.
  • Collaborate with internal scientific, medical, and operational teams to ensure prospective client needs are properly understood.
  • Maintain accurate records of prospects, opportunities, engagement activity, and pipeline development.
  • Monitor market trends, therapeutic areas, industry developments, and potential business opportunities across the life sciences sector.
  • Contribute to the continued growth and expansion of the organization's U.S. market presence.

Remote Work & Technology Requirements

Although this is a remote position, candidates must have a professional home-office environment suitable for full-time business development work.

Candidates must have:

  • A dedicated and professional workspace.
  • A reliable computer suitable for business and video conferencing applications.
  • Reliable high-speed internet.
  • A professional webcam and headset/audio setup.
  • A quiet environment suitable for confidential client conversations and virtual meetings.
  • The ability to maintain reliable working connectivity during normal working hours.
  • The ability to independently manage day-to-day work using the organization's technology and communication systems.

California & Field-Based Requirements

Candidates must currently reside in California.

While the position is remote, the successful candidate must be comfortable operating as a field-based business development professional.

This includes:

  • Traveling to meet prospective and existing clients.
  • Attending conferences, congresses, networking events, and scientific meetings.
  • Building relationships with clients and prospects in person.
  • Representing the organization professionally at industry events.
  • Traveling within California and, when required, elsewhere in the U.S.

This position is not suitable for candidates seeking a fully remote role with no client travel or in-person business development activity.

Compensation & Incentive

The anticipated base salary range is $120,000-$160,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

The position also includes a performance-based incentive structure tied to business development results.

Application Process

To ensure fairness and consistency, all applicants must complete every stage of the hiring process.

Applicants selected to move forward will complete:

  1. Application Form
  2. Pre-Screen Questionnaire
  3. One-Way Video Interview
  4. Pre-Screen Interview
  5. Final Interview
  6. Background Check

A background check will be required for candidates who are shortlisted as part of the final hiring process. Employment will be subject to successful completion of the applicable background check.

If you have the medical communications expertise, life sciences industry knowledge, commercial experience, and relationship-building ability to help grow a global organization in the U.S. market, we would like to hear from you.

Requirements:

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5+ years of experience in medical communications, with proven B2B business development experience.
  • Business development or commercial experience within life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medtech, healthcare services, or a closely related sector.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Life Sciences or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical, biotech, and broader life sciences ecosystem.
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders within Medical Affairs, Medical Information, Medical Excellence, Medical Communications, or related functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate leads, develop relationships, create qualified opportunities, and contribute to business growth.
  • Strong consultative selling and value-based communication skills.
  • Experience developing account engagement strategies and long-term client relationships.
  • Confidence communicating with senior-level stakeholders and decision-makers.

  • Strong organizational skills and consistent follow-through.
  • The ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with a global team.
  • The ability and willingness to travel within California and elsewhere in the U.S. as required for client and industry engagement.
