Job description

TITLE: Bus Monitor/Bus Driver Assistant
            180 Days

RESPONSIBLE TO: Transportation Director/Manager

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education/Certification: 

 

High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred Reference Review 

 

Passed State Physical Examination ~ If asked MVR/Criminal/Drug and Alcohol Review 

 

Skills Required: 

Ability to follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately; ability to carry out an emergency evacuation; ability to satisfactorily complete the school system safety training course and monitor training; good communication skills; ability to lift 50 lbs. or more.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Assist drivers and students. 
 

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

1. Assume responsibility for equipment issued. 

 

    a. Maintain equipment mechanically according to Coweta County School Transportation Guidelines. 

 

    b. Clean seating area of the bus regularly. 

 

    c. Keep all wheelchair straps and seat belts off the floor and in clean condition.  

 

2. Maintain and improve monitoring skills. 

 

   a. Start and end bus runs at assigned times every work day - Excellent attendance and punctuality required. 

 

   b. Prompt and complete attendance at safety training classes. 

 

   c. Prompt and complete attendance at first aid training classes. 

 

   d. Prompt and complete attendance at monitoring skills classes, practice sessions and skill demonstrations. 

 

   e. Individually seek means of improving bus monitoring skills.
3. Supervise students while loading, riding and unloading buses. 

 

  a. Remind students of safe loading and unloading procedures.
b. Monitor students and traffic as loading and unloading occurs.
c. Monitor and maintain student behavior during riding. 



 

   d. Maintain a positive relationship with assigned students. 

 

  e. Refer problem students to designated school officials. 

 

   f. Load and unload wheelchairs as safely as possible using the lift in the proper manner.  
4. Cooperate with Administration, parents and co-workers. 

 

   a. Follow all state laws, local board policies and transportation policies and procedures as directed. 

 

   b. Respond courteously to inquiries by administration, principals, teachers, and parents. 

 

   c. Discuss with Transportation Director/Manager any means of improving local school bus service or means of solving local school bus problems. 
 

 

5. Cooperate with and maintain a good relationship with all school system employees.
6. Familiarize and effect compliance with Coweta County Public School Driver's 

Manual to include the Special Needs Section. 
7. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Transportation Director/Manager, transportation personnel and/or bus driver assigned to.
