SCHOOL CITY OF EAST CHICAGO

2026-2027 School Year

POSITION: Dispatcher (Transportation)

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

Job Goal: Director and Operations Manager in the area of dispatching bus drivers to ensure safe, timely transportation of district students to school and related school events. Assist in the development and maintenance of bus routes. Assist with emergencies and adjustments due to accidents, weather, breakdowns or school schedules. Assists parents, drivers and school administrators in the resolution of problem situations.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Experience in general transportation operations

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develops and monitors routes to improve efficiency.
  2. Schedule and dispatch buses and district vehicles to appropriate routes.
  3. Dispatch and coordinate bus and driver assignments for school sponsored trips
  4. Secure substitute drivers due to absences and review routes with substitutes as necessary.
  5. Communicate with drivers via the transportation communication system regarding routes, emergencies and student problems.
  6. Develop and maintain records for driver assignments and vehicle scheduling and use.
  7. Receive and respond to phone calls from parents or the public concerning transportation by providing information or referring call to appropriate staff members.
  8. Assist in the development of bus routes and schedules and updating routes and schedules throughout the school year.
  9. Assist in developing routes in routing program/software.
  10. Works with principals, parents, and bus drivers regarding scheduling, route problems, complaints and student code of conduct as it relates to student behavior on buses.
  11. Maintains constant communication with bus drivers via two-way radio.
  12. Assigns bus drivers and substitutes in absence of supervisor.
  13. Assists in routine office operations.
  14. Promotes safety practices for all transportation employees
  15. Maintains accurate route records.
  16. Maintains records as required.
  17. Must possess written communication skills, including the ability to draft, edit, and proofread emails, as well as reading comprehension to respond to those emails.

18. Any and all other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions and Physical Environment

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
