The Bus Attendant is knowledgeable of the school routes, remains alert to monitor the welfare of the student passengers, and communicates behavior issues and/or student conditions with the bus driver. SUMMARY: The Bus Attendant is knowledgeable of the school routes, remains alert to monitor the welfare of passengers, and communicates behavior issues and conditions with the bus driver.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists in the safe transportation of passengers.
  • Assists students in the loading and unloading process; utilizes the steps multiple times daily.
  • Regularly communicates with passengers and bus drivers.
  • Enforces school system student conduct rules while on route; reports problems to bus driver.
  • Adheres to District policies and procedures including local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Attends safety, training, and informational meetings.
  • Maintains familiarity with school bus routes.
  • Remains alert to monitor welfare of passengers.
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills, including use of exiting via emergency door and assisting in opening and closing the service door.
  • Always adheres to FERPA regulations and maintains confidentiality.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Subject to background check and drug screen.
  • Two (2) years working with children is preferred.
  • Good verbal communication skills with a strong attendance record.
  • Good with children of all ages and the ability to manage stressful situations.
  • Early morning and afternoon availability.
  • Committed to a Safety First.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to work in a friendly manner with coworkers and students. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.

The following physical demands are occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. Job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with students, the public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescription controlled substance use and/or abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.
