REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
WORK SCHEDULE: 185 days
DATE REVIEWED: 02/2021
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The Board of Education, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, shall appoint the Bus Driver. The annual period of service for the Bus Driver shall be 185 days.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Operates school buses safely under all types of weather conditions; Transports students and other authorized persons to and from the assigned education center, event facilities, activity locations, and field trip destinations; controls passenger behavior and maintains safe operations of the assigned bus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
  • Drives designated route according to stop times, stop location, and safely transports students to and from school, field trips and other designated activities
  • Conducts thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, verifies that the bus has sufficient fuel, and ensures that special equipment and communications devices are in working order (two-way radio, stop arms, on board cameras, external cameras, etc.)
  • Routinely conducts an inventory of bus emergency and first aid supplies in accordance to established policies and procedures; Immediately reports if devices, supplies, or emergency equipment is inoperable or missing
  • In the event of an accident, assures that all medical procedures are followed, completes timely accident report(s) in accordance to policy and procedures
  • Maintains student discipline on the bus and refers serious infractions to appropriate administrator using student discipline form.
  • Operates school bus in accordance with laws of Georgia and in accordance with the policies prescribed by City Schools of Decatur school system in a safe and proficient manner under all weather conditions
  • Follows procedures to guarantee that no student is left alone on a bus without adult supervision at any time; Ensures that all children that all students/riders have departed the bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips an other special trips)
  • Provides maximum safety for passengers while on the bus and during loading and unloading
  • Delivers bus to Fleet maintenance facility as directed by a pre-arranged monthly schedule for bus service
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills as required by local school system
  • May be called upon to assist with transportation training for bus aides, bus monitors, teachers, students and volunteers
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with school staff and the public; maintains a professional appearance in accordance to department dress codes or policies
  • Demonstrates punctuality and regular attendance; work hours may vary during the school year
  • Maintains external and internal cleanliness of bus as required for safe comfortable operation
  • Submit legible accurate reports and time sheets in a timely manner as required by the Transportation Department
  • Maintains an active Commercial Driver's License; attends required training meetings, orientations, state safety meetings, and all in-service training as requested

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus (P&S) endorsements required
  • Must pass a pre-employment and random drug test. Must pass a pre-employment and annual physical exam

PREFFERED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • 4 years operating commercial vehicles either over-the-road or passenger
  • 2 years prior experience operating a school bus

EVALUATION: Performance of this job shall be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: To perform the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, and hear. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required on an occasional basis. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required of this job include close vision and distance vision.
