Job Description 

Summary/objective

Under the supervision of the Director of Building and Grounds, coordinates and directs grounds maintenance and gardening activities involved in the maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas; plans, develops and implements landscaping and gardening projects; trains and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.

Essential functions

  • Maintains turf areas, to include mowing, edging, weeding, watering, fertilizing and the campus synthetic field.  Assists in patching, overseeding the campus grass paver lot, softball field grass and weeds, or resodding dead areas and reseeding.
  • Maintains shrubs and trees, to include trimming and shaping of branches; watering, mulching, and weeding; complete removal of shrubs and trees.  Assists in the preparation of soil and the planting of new shrubs and trees.  Removes dead leaves and other debris.
  • Maintains flowerbeds and other landscaped areas, to include mulching, weeding, and watering, removal of dead material, preparation of beds, and planting of new flowers and other decorative plants.
  • Oversees the trash removal for facility buildings; contacts vendor for disposal and trash container pick up.
  • Police grounds, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, and building entrance areas; sweep or blow clean as needed on a daily basis.
  • Assist in the removal of snow and ice and the dispensing of ice-melt chemicals. This position requires the monitoring and the purchasing of ice melt chemicals for the campus as needed.
  • Oversees the purchasing and delivery of fill dirt, mulch, fertilizers and grounds chemicals, grounds care equipment and tools, plants and shrubs, etc., as needed to complete assigned work.
  • In the performance of the duties listed above, operate and help maintain lawn mowers (riding, self-propelled, and push-types), weed eaters, edgers (both powered and manual), shop trucks and tractors, and related equipment.

Supervisory responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates grounds maintenance tasks, instructs groundskeepers in preventative maintenance tasks/repairs, and oversees the campus garbage collection and disposal services. Oversees indoor and outdoor pesticide treatments. Oversees and coordinates all arboriculture needs. Oversees outside contractor grounds maintenance, backflow prevention and irrigation maintenance. Coordinates with the Athletics department on all outside athletic events.

Work environment

  • This position requires the selected applicant to work in all seasons of weather outdoors.

Physical demands

  • Requires full range of body motion, including reaching, stooping, kneeling, climbing and walking. Must be able to lift/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires standing for extended periods of time. Requires ability to operate motorized equipment requiring manual dexterity.  Must have good vision, with or without corrective lenses.

Travel required

  • Travel required is limited to on campus and periodically off campus to obtain materials required to perform your daily duties. Randolph College requires a valid driver’s license issued from the state of Virginia to operate a college owned vehicle and as a prerequisite to driving a college owned vehicle the job applicant must pass a driver safety session with the campus security department.

Required education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified pesticide applicator license (Required within 6 months of employment)
  • Supervisory experience (minimum of two years preferred)
  • Experience in dealing with contractors and contracts.
  • Must be able to work during inclement weather and emergencies.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 Preferred education and experience

  •  Experience in arboriculture.
