Job description

An established boutique family law firm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is seeking an experienced Family Law Attorney to join its respected practice. With more than 30 years in business, the firm has built an excellent reputation, a loyal client base, and a steady flow of family law matters throughout the Triangle. The practice handles a wide range of domestic matters including divorce, child custody, support, equitable distribution, and related cases.

The firm currently consists of five attorneys, including the owner, along with a strong support team of experienced paralegals and legal assistants. This is an outstanding opportunity for an attorney who values autonomy, meaningful responsibility, and the chance to join a stable practice with long-term leadership potential.

About the Opportunity

This is a primarily in-person role based in Chapel Hill, ideal for an attorney who can step into active matters with confidence and work independently with minimal oversight. The firm values trust, flexibility, and results over micromanagement. For the right candidate, there is a genuine long-term opportunity to take over or lead the firm if desired.

Responsibilities

  • Handle a broad range of family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, equitable distribution, and related domestic cases
  • Manage cases from intake through resolution, including negotiation, mediation, hearings, and trial preparation
  • Draft pleadings, motions, agreements, and other legal documents
  • Represent clients in court appearances and contested proceedings
  • Work closely with paralegals and support staff to ensure efficient case management
  • Maintain strong client relationships through responsive and thoughtful counsel
  • Contribute to the long-term growth and continued success of the practice

Qualifications

  • Active North Carolina Bar license in good standing
  • Minimum of 2+ years of family law experience required
  • Ability to confidently step into active cases with minimal training or supervision
  • Strong communication, advocacy, and case management skills
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently
  • Comfortable working fully in-person initially (remote flexibility available after six months or as needed for appointments)

Preferred Background

  • Existing ties to the Triangle market
  • Ability to bring an existing caseload or referral relationships
  • Interest in long-term succession and eventually leading or taking over the practice in approximately 3–10 years
  • North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Family Law preferred

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, depending on experience
  • Percentage of billables collected on top of base compensation
  • Benefits begin after 90 days
  • Vision and dental insurance with 50% of premiums paid by the firm
  • 50% employer-paid life insurance
  • 401(k) with matching up to 3% of salary
  • Paid holidays and PTO offerings

This is an exceptional opportunity for a family law attorney seeking autonomy, strong earning potential, and a realistic path to future ownership within a respected Chapel Hill practice.
