Job description

Regulatory Engineer

Department: Manufacturing

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Austin

Reporting To: Peter Fernandez

Compensation: $135,000 - $150,000 / year

Description

The Regulatory Compliance Engineer (RCE) will lead Brivo's global product certification efforts. In this role, the engineer will be the subject matter expert responsible for ensuring our products meet all international standards for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI emissions and immunity) and product safety.

The RCE will manage the end-to-end certification process-from early design reviews to final global market access-working closely with cross-functional engineering teams and third-party test laboratories to secure FCC, UL, CE, and other international marks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Global Strategy: Define, document, and execute regulatory compliance roadmaps for new and existing products to ensure seamless entry into global markets (North America, EU, APAC, LATAM).
  • Standards Ownership: Identify and interpret relevant standards for emissions (e.g., FCC Part 15, CISPR), immunity (e.g., EN/IEC 61000 series), and product safety (e.g., UL/IEC 62368-1, UL 60950, or industry-specific standards).
  • Agency Interface: Serve as the primary point of contact with external test labs and certification bodies (e.g., UL, Intertek, TUV, CSA).
  • Design Guidance: Partner with Hardware, RF, and PCB Layout engineers early in the product development lifecycle to implement "Design for Compliance" best practices.
  • Test Planning & Execution: Create comprehensive test plans, prepare products/software builds for testing, and oversee or directly conduct pre-compliance testing in-house.
  • Troubleshooting: Analyze test failures (e.g., radiated emissions spikes, ESD susceptibility) and collaborate with the design team to develop root-cause fixes and mitigation strategies.
  • Technical Construction Files (TCF): Compile and maintain critical compliance documentation, including test reports, Declarations of Conformity (DoC), and user manual regulatory statements.
  • Sustaining Compliance: Monitor global regulatory changes and standards updates, evaluating their impact on legacy products and managing required recertifications.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience: 3-5+ years of direct experience in regulatory compliance engineering for hardware products.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of FCC (US), ISED (Canada), and CE Mark (EU) directives (EMC Directive, Low Voltage Directive, Radio Equipment Directive).
  • Safety Standards: Hands-on experience navigating UL standards and the OSHA NRTL scheme.
  • Lab Skills: Proficiency using RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and ESD guns for pre-compliance troubleshooting.
  • Experience with global international approvals outside of US/EU (e.g., CCC for China, KC for Korea, VCCI for Japan, Anatel for Brazil).
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations such as RoHS, REACH, and WEEE.
  • Strong project management skills with a track record of balancing multiple product launches simultaneously.
