Description
The Senior Maintenance Specialist (Electrician) is skilled in advanced electrical and electronic systems, with expertise in interpreting blueprints, maintaining and repairing power, communication, security, and surveillance systems. Proven ability to troubleshoot malfunctions, respond to emergencies, and ensure reliable operations while tracking labor and material costs. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Examples of Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical systems, wiring, circuits, lighting, and power distribution across county facilities..
  • Respond to electrical emergencies to maintain uninterrupted county operations and public safety.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and extend system life.
  • Install new systems, including panels, breakers, fixtures, receptacles, switches, and specialized equipment.
  • Upgrade outdated or non-compliant systems to meet current codes and safety standards.
  • Provide skilled electrical expertise on construction and renovation projects.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, state regulations, and county policies.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and mitigate electrical hazards.
  • Maintain systems supporting essential operations, such as generators, detention center security, courthouse power, and traffic/exterior lighting.
  • Provide immediate response during severe weather or emergencies to restore power.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, installations, and upgrades.
  • Use facility management software (e.g., Brightly, Smartsheet, PubWorks) to track and complete work orders.
  • Assist in developing asset inventories and lifecycle replacement plans.
  • Collaborate with facilities staff, project managers, contractors, and other departments.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and the public during work in occupied spaces.
  • Contribute to design, budgeting, and procurement for electrical projects.
  • Recommend and implement energy-efficient solutions, including LED retrofits and smart controls.
  • Support sustainability initiatives, energy audits, and long-term planning for system improvements.
  • Properly use, maintain, and secure tools, testing devices, and county vehicles.
  • Stay current on electrical technologies, safety standards, and continuing education.
  • Train and mentor junior staff or contractors.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Municipal Association of SC Master Certification preferred or Journeyman Certification under supervision or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
