Job description

Senior Railroad Bridge Engineer

Location: Kansas City, MO (new office hub) or Fully Remote (U.S. based)

Experience: 11+ years in railroad bridge design

Employment Type: Full-time

About the Firm

This is not just another engineering consultancyโ€”itโ€™s a 130+ year-old leader in bridge design, inspection, and rehabilitation. The team specializes in complex railroad bridges of every type, from truss and girder spans to movable and historic structures. Their work directly supports Class I freight railroads and passenger rail clients across the U.S. and Canada. The culture is shaped by employee ownership, technical excellence, and long-term stability. With a new office opening in Kansas City, the firm is making a strategic investment in expanding its railroad bridge practice.

The Opportunity

The Senior Railroad Bridge Engineer will be a foundational technical expert for the Kansas City office, while also serving clients nationwide. The role offers the chance to remain deeply technicalโ€”leading design, analysis, and detailingโ€”while mentoring junior engineers and guiding project teams. Roughly 60โ€“70% of your time will be hands-on technical work, with the balance split between client interaction and proposal/business development support.

This role is high-stakes and fast-paced. When railroad bridges face issues, trains stop movingโ€”and that means clients rely on immediate, practical, and safe solutions. Youโ€™ll be at the center of that problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design and detailing of railroad bridge components, including new structures, rehabilitations, and load ratings, in accordance with AREMA standards.
  • Serve as technical lead on complex projects and provide mentorship to junior staff.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to identify issues, develop innovative solutions, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality work.
  • Supervise and review the work of engineers and technicians on concurrent projects.
  • Participate in client meetings and assist with proposal development.
  • Perform occasional field inspections and construction support (travel expected <10%).

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required; SE license is a strong plus.
  • 11โ€“22 years of progressive experience, with a primary career focus on railroad bridge design.
  • Proven ability to lead design teams and act as a technical lead on complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of AREMA bridge analysis, design, and detailing methods.
  • Direct experience with Class I freight railroads (e.g., BNSF, CPKC, CSX, NS, UP, Amtrak) is highly valued.
  • Recognized technical contributions (publications, AREMA committee involvement) are a bonus.
  • Skilled communicator with the ability to guide teams and collaborate with clients.
  • Calm, adaptable, and practical in urgent, high-pressure project scenarios.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $155,000+ (dependent on experience and credentials; SE license and Class I client relationships support higher range).
  • Ownership: 100% employee-owned (ESOP) with 3-year vesting.
  • Retirement: 401k with company match.
  • Health: Free medical, dental, and vision coverage for individual employees.
  • Time Off: 22โ€“26+ days PTO plus 9 paid holidays; unused PTO and comp time are paid out annually.
  • Flexibility: Paid overtime, bankable comp time (up to 60 hours), hybrid/remote work options.
  • Support: Tuition reimbursement, license/certification reimbursement, mentorship, and $500 home office stipend.

Why This Role?

This is a rare chance to:

  • Join a strategic new office and shape its future as a senior technical leader.
  • Become an owner, not just an employee, in a stable and growing firm.
  • Work exclusively on railroad bridgesโ€”surrounded by people who share your passion for this specialized field.
  • Have real impact on nationally significant infrastructure projects while enjoying flexible scheduling, unmatched benefits, and long-term stability.
