Job description

What Your Day Will Look Like:
As a Bridge Design Lead, you will serve as a technical authority responsible for the planning, design, analysis, and delivery of complex bridge and transportation infrastructure projects. Leveraging advanced structural engineering expertise, you will lead the development of innovative, cost-effective, and constructible design solutions that meet client objectives while adhering to applicable industry codes, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.
In this role, you will oversee all phases of bridge design, including structural analysis, load rating, rehabilitation, and new structure design, while coordinating closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure successful project execution. You will be accountable for the technical quality, accuracy, schedule, and performance of design deliverables, driving consistency and excellence across projects.
As a recognized leader within the practice, you will provide technical direction, perform design reviews, mentor and develop junior engineers, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and knowledge sharing. You will also contribute to project strategy, risk management, resource planning, and business development initiatives, helping to expand client relationships and strengthen the firm's bridge engineering capabilities. Through your leadership, you will promote engineering excellence, operational efficiency, and the successful delivery of safe, resilient, and sustainable transportation infrastructure.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead the preparation and review of bridge design plans, structural calculations, specifications, and technical reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Apply advanced engineering principles, industry standards, and applicable codes to develop innovative, safe, resilient, and cost-effective bridge design solutions.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to align project objectives, resolve technical challenges, and maintain project schedules.
  • Perform and oversee structural analyses, load ratings, rehabilitation assessments, cost estimates, and quantity takeoffs to support project planning and successful delivery.
  • Direct quality assurance and quality control efforts, including independent design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination checks, and responses to stakeholder and construction-phase comments.
  • Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers, fostering professional development and promoting consistency in engineering practices across the team.
  • Serve as the technical lead for bridge projects, managing design execution, technical decision-making, risk mitigation, and adherence to project scope, budget, and schedule commitments.
  • Develop and evaluate alternatives for new bridge construction, replacement, rehabilitation, and preservation projects, considering lifecycle costs, constructability, sustainability, and client objectives.
  • Support business development initiatives by contributing to proposals, scope development, fee estimates, client presentations, and strategic pursuits that strengthen market presence and client relationships.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, design methodologies, and transportation infrastructure trends, driving continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence within the bridge engineering practice.

What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in structural/bridge design, including extensive work on TxDOT projects.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation ORD, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and bridge design/analysis software such as LEAP, CSI, or similar tools.
  • Demonstrated experience leading design teams and delivering projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with proposal development and client engagement experience considered a plus.
  • This hybrid job operates between an office environment and a field environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones and copy machines. May require occasional exposure to work environments that may include inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazard, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water, depending on project requirements.
  • While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, hearing, and occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling. This job may occasionally require operating a company vehicle, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs.
