Job description

Are you energetic, customer-focused, and passionate about serving your community? The Allen County Public Library is seeking a Part-Time Branch Assistant to join our team at the Georgetown Branch, one of our busiest and most vibrant locations.

The Georgetown Branch serves a diverse community and is especially popular with middle school-aged children and teens. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a lively environment, loves helping people, and thrives when juggling multiple responsibilities at once.

What You'll Do

As a Branch Assistant, you'll help create a welcoming and positive experience for every visitor. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting patrons with checking materials in and out
  • Helping customers locate books, materials, and resources
  • Issuing new library cards and updating patron accounts
  • Processing payments and explaining library fees
  • Answering questions in person, by phone, and via email
  • Assisting with holds and requested materials
  • Monitoring returned items and routing them appropriately
  • Providing information about library programs, services, and events
  • Supporting daily branch operations and maintaining an inviting environment

No two days are exactly alike. You'll regularly interact with children, teens, families, and adults while helping keep our busy branch running smoothly.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate enjoys working with people of all ages and is comfortable in a busy, active environment.

Successful candidates will:

  • Enjoy interacting with children and teens
  • Be comfortable working in a branch where noise levels can be higher due to heavy youth and family use
  • Thrive in a fast-paced setting with frequent interruptions and competing priorities
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills
  • Be able to multitask while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Work well independently and as part of a team
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patron records and transactions
  • Learn and use library technology and automated systems effectively

Experience with customer service, library services, education, recreation, or youth-focused environments is helpful but not required.

The schedule is 28 hours per week. Starting pay is $14.05-16.00, depending on experience.

  • Sunday: OFF
  • Monday:12:15 - 9:15 PM
  • Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Thursday:OFF
  • Alternating Friday/Saturday: 9:15 AM - 6:15 PM (3-week rotation)
