PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide direct support to a student with visual impairments for all or part of the instructional day as determined by the student's IEP (Individualized Education Plan).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Some college (Preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of students with visual impairments preferred.
  • Knowledge of Google and ability to learn district management systems. Knowledge of Braille preferred

Experience:
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience is preferred.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training in the area of visual impairments.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Assume responsibility for the organization and operation of work within the area of supporting students and staff working with deaf education students following federal program guidelines as directed by the district and as specified in 34 Code of Federal Regulations 300.208 (a)(1).
  • Assisting vision professionals and campus staff to adapt instructional materials, to include braille translation, magnification devices or assistive technology software
  • Assisting, creating and distributing large print, tactile materials, braille books and other adaptive materials to the student in real time for student access to the curriculum
  • Reinforcement of the skills/concepts taught by the teacher, CTVI, or O&M specialist
  • Support and reinforcement instruction
  • Provide verbal description of visual presentations, classroom demonstrations or videos
  • Verbalize worksheets which has not been braille or enlarged
  • Scribe when materials were not provided in accessible format
  • A team member with the classroom teacher/CTVI/O&M to help the student reach her or his highest potential possible in the least invasive way
  • Foster student Independence
  • Provide direct support to a student with deaf/blindness during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, and as indicated in the student's IEP;
  • Follows the student's IEP and the modifications and instructional techniques recommended by the student's instructional and related service staff;
  • Keeps a daily log of information about the student and his or her activities;
  • Participates in IEP Meetings and student staffing's;
  • Participates in the assessment of the student and in the preparation of IEP's, progress reports, behavior plans, data collection, and other documentation for program monitoring;
  • Participates in site-based, regional, and statewide training in the area Visual impairments;
  • Serves as a resource to other staff on issues related to deaf/blindness;
  • Follows team decisions, established policies and procedures, and designated lines of communication and authority.

EQUIPMENT USED:
Student technology as determined by student's IEP; computer, telephone, copier Computer, printer, copier, fax and specialized scanner
Specialized software and hardware to prepare Braille and other tactile materials such as but not limited to:
  • Tyger Pro Printer for Braille graphics PC Paint to fill in graphics
  • Corel DRAW for graphics
  • Braille 2000 to add Braille labels to graphics Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft Excel

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written);
  • Maintain emotional control under stressPhysical Demands/Environmental Factors:
  • Work with frequent interruptions. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling. Prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
