Job description

JOB SUMMARY
The Braillist/Braille Transcriber is a specialized role responsible for providing essential support to students with visual impairments, including those with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). This position involves transcribing educational materials into Braille and creating specialized adaptations, such as tactile graphics, adapted books, tactile learning materials, and visual aids to ensure full access to the curriculum. Working under the guidance of a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), the Braillist operates in an itinerant capacity across multiple school environments, supporting students' academic and learning needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary in consultation with the employee(s) involved.

  1. Assists with implementing detailed plans for individual students or small groups as developed by the TVI.
  2. Prepares and adapts instructional materials into appropriate modes (Braille, tactile, or large print). This includes the creation of adapted books, tactile learning materials, and other specialized visual aids as required for student programming.
  3. Supports students in general education and special education setting by providing specially designed instruction, organizational assistance, scribing lessons, and proctoring tests.
  4. Transcribes educational materials using Braille software.
  5. Assists students with troubleshooting classroom technology and assistive devices.
  6. Records classroom data and provides regular feedback to the TVI and classroom teachers on student progress. Acts as a liaison between students, teachers, and building staff.
  7. Assists with student behavior management and social skills in cooperation with case managers; ensures student safety at all times and redirects behavior consistent with established plans.
  8. Participates in IEP team meetings and staff meetings as requested. Consults with members of the educational team to ensure cohesive service delivery.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to teacher of the visually impaired and the special education director.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in a classroom environment; students in these classrooms may have severe and profound physical and/or behavior disabilities that may present significant work challenges for the paraeducator. Required to travel between schools. May be required to deal with students with severe behavioral disorders. The position involves frequent walking, sitting, grasping, handling and manual dexterity. The position requires the ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds to move student and department equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
Must meet the minimum paraeducator requirements as defined by the state.
Must be Unified English Braille (UEB) certified, WA State Braille Test certified, or National Literary Braille Competency Test certified.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Willingness to learn about special education student disabilities, terms and special needs equipment used; Willingness to learn about classroom management techniques; ability to work cooperatively with teachers and enjoy interacting with children; knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, and English usage; ability to read, write, speak, and compute effectively; ability to work independently, ability to operate computers and learn specific software; ability to be accepting of students with disabilities; demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills; ability to maintain confidential information; ability to interact with children in a warm, confident manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the public; knowledge of visual impairments desired but not required.
Licenses
Washington State Driver License and personal vehicle required.
SALARY: $39.81 - $48.17.Salary is based upon the current 2025-26 ESP Salary Schedule Salary (Level II) - 2026/27 ESP Salary Schedule is under review; placement on the salary schedule will be determined by Human Resources DOE. FLSA Non-Exempt.
WORK YEAR: 6.5 hours per day, 192 days per year.

Generally, you are eligible for SEBB benefits if you are anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
