Job Summary
As a Data Engineer at BPMI, you will work under limited supervision and performs moderately complex critical technical functions to execute the BPMI mission in areas including, but not limited to, driving the adoption of data science and analytics into standard project execution methods and procedures that enhance the organization's operational and engineering outcomes.
In this role, the employee develops scalable data systems that improve the quality, accessibility, and insight of information across BPMI. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to turn business and technical data into actionable solutions that ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with standards. Work includes designing and maintaining data pipelines, lakes, warehouses, and reports, as well as preparing and organizing data to support predictive and prescriptive analytics.
Essential Duties:
  • Evaluate and design data pipelines, warehouses, and integration strategies that ensure scalability, reliability, and compliance with BPMI standards.
  • Analyze existing and future datasets for both technical (from system development concepts through the end-of-life system support) and business (business and logistics data analysis) functions.
  • Develop and implement robust extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes to manage data movement across environments.
  • Collaborate with data owners to scope problems and deliver solutions that improve engineering decision making and simplify business processes.
  • Recommend improvements to database architecture and storage solutions based on performance, security, and future scalability needs.
  • Troubleshoot complex data issues, perform root cause analyses, and resolve integration and quality problems proactively.
  • Model and optimize data structures that support analytics, dashboards, and predictive modeling.
  • Create visualization and graphic user interfaces using Power BI or code development.
  • Innovate data engineering practices by introducing automation, orchestration, and monitoring tools that streamline operations.
  • Justify proposed approaches with impact assessments and technical rationale grounded in data analysis and organizational requirements.
  • Create comprehensive documentation to ensure knowledge transfer and consistency across projects.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Twelve (12) or more years of completed education and/or relevant experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years of experience requirements.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.

Preferred Job Requirements:
  • Experience with data storage (SQL) and analysis tools (Python, R).
  • Experience working with data warehouses.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server tools and Power BI.
  • Demonstrated understanding of math and statistics.
  • Knowledge of Data Lake, and Databricks familiarity are preferred.
  • Experience working with data owners and users to understand the needs of varied stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and role specific applications.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills - effectively communicating technical and project related information.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, with strong attention to detail and deadlines. Committed to maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and project scopes while ensuring consistent adherence to internal processes and regulatory requirements. Strong desire to learn and adapt to new challenges.
