Job Description:

Role Synopsis
The Environmental Engineer - Low Carbon is an early career role supporting bpx's methane and carbon initiatives through emissions forecasting, certification program coordination, applying regulatory compliance principles, and development of clear, data driven narratives. Working under the direction of experienced engineers, this role contributes to improving data quality, reporting transparency, and overall readiness for internal and external stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
  • Support greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions forecasting activities by gathering inputs, performing quality checks, and maintaining documentation using established processes.
  • Coordinate administrative aspects of the MiQ certification program, including document management, audit preparation, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Assist in developing clear and concise narratives describing methane management programs, emissions performance, and decarbonization initiatives for leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, operations, and digital teams) to ensure accurate and consistent reporting inputs.
  • Support continuous improvement of low carbon workflows, tools, and data processes.
  • Cross-train and provide support in traditional environmental areas (e.g., air quality permitting and compliance, reporting, project support, regulatory review) as business needs require.
  • Awareness of various international, federal, and state regulations, and BP corporate requirements.
  • Coordinate, prepare and submit air permit applications and associated technical documents.
  • Facilitate and lead environmental compliance database data quality improvements and business process flow standardization.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (engineering, operations, legal, policy and regulatory) to proactively identify, analyze, assess impact of, and develop mitigation strategies to manage, potential air emissions risks and policies.
  • Provide air compliance technical support on the implementation of emission reduction efforts.
  • Make dedicated trips to the field to work with operations personnel to manage low carbon initiatives and gain a better understanding of operations.
  • Assist in preparation of GHG emissions reduction estimates for new projects, monthly updates and internal GHG reports.
  • Influence facility design and planning process to proactively embed environmental considerations into design, planning, and implementation.
  • Provide project management, including preparing requests for proposals, work orders, and supervision of contractors.
  • Participate in and collaborate with applicable external environmental and regulatory workgroups and committees.

Essential Education
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or other relevant technical/science-related degree.

Essential Experience and Job Requirements
  • Early-career experience (internship or up to ~3 years) in environmental, sustainability, or engineering roles.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information into clear summaries.
  • Statistical and analytical thinking: Ability to evaluate datasets, perform basic statistical analysis, and identify trends, anomalies, and patterns in emissions or operational data.
  • Pattern recognition & problem solving: Ability to connect data insights to operational drivers and support development of actionable improvements.
  • Digital and data collaboration: Ability to work effectively with IT, data, or digital teams to define data needs, troubleshoot issues, and enable delivery of accurate and timely outputs to the business.
  • Strategic awareness: Interest in understanding how current data, tools, and processes support broader methane and carbon reduction goals, with the ability to contribute to discussions on future-state improvements.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill technical information into clear, audience-appropriate messaging.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willing to travel to field locations.

Desirable Criteria
  • Exposure to greenhouse gas inventories, emissions data, or sustainability reporting.
  • Familiarity with data tools (Excel, dashboards, or reporting systems).
  • Interest in methane management, carbon reduction, or energy transition initiatives.
