Job Summary

This position plays a vital role in helping the Albany County Public Library serve the information and education needs for adults and children in Albany County. Reporting to the Adult Services Librarian, this person works in close collaboration with the members of the Adult Services department to provide quality programming and information services across all four ACPL branches. Position works a Sunday to Thursday schedule.


Duties and Responsibilities

Desk Operations & Customer Service

  • Serves as a member of ACPL's Branch Library Team to provide consistent service across all four branches of the Albany County Public Library: Bookmobile, Centennial, Laramie, and Rock River.
  • Work assigned hours at ACPL service points and substitute for other staff as needed.
  • Maintains patron privacy and other library values and advocates for intellectual freedom and freedom of access issues.
  • Serves as a member of the Ref/Tech team, providing one-on-one reference and technology support as needed.
  • Maintains proficiency with library technology and equipment, including troubleshooting problems and light maintenance of library equipment (printers, copiers, and microfilm reader).
  • Partners with Branch Library Team to deliver services throughout the community with the library bookmobile; makes recommendations for updates to procedures.

Programming

  • Recommends and implements library programming in partnership with colleagues across departments
  • Serve as back-up programming support for Adult and Youth Services programming.
  • Assists Ref/Tech team with tech tabling at select outreach locations.

Collections

  • Selects for assigned collections
  • Creates monthly and quarterly displays in rotation with other members of the Adult Services Department

Operations and Finance

  • Manages portions of programming budget as assigned
  • Drives bookmobile and supports basic maintenance needs of library bookmobile

Communication

  • Collaborates with Public Relations Specialist to promote public library services and programming

Organization-wide expectations

  • Deal effectively with a variety of people in the face of interruptions and stress.
  • Explain and enforce, with clarify and empathy, library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Assist library patrons with their questions, concerns and requests.

  • Process and handle money collected such as fees, donations, and credit cards.
  • Use and help patrons and staff by using computers, digitals devices, apps, social media, printers, fax machines, and library specific software.
  • Process library materials, including checking items in and out, assessing material conditions, locating material and accurately organizing them.
  • Keep skills current and growing: participate in library meetings and committees, attend trainings, seek learning opportunities, follow current trends related to job area.
  • Be committed to public service values: work well with and demonstrate patience with all customers, volunteers, and other staff members.
  • Offer suggestions for better customer service and/or library functions.


Knowledge & Skills

  • Intermediate skills with technology including email, social media, websearching and mobile devices, Google suite, Canva.
  • Library and library materials knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Customer service experience and ability to work well with all ages.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college or college degree.
  • Experience working in a public library or similar work experience, particularly human services, retail, or hospitality industries.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations.
  • Bilingual skills.

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a library environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and regularly interacts with members of the public in person, over the phone, and by email.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine and complex documents, read small print and computer screens. Moves book carts with 20 pounds of weight. Shelves books at heights between six feet and floor level.

  • Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and be able to meet the driver policy requirements. Documentation will be required for the final candidate.
  • Expected to work 30-40 hours per week. Some weekend and evening hours may be required

This is a benefited position. Benefits package includes: employee health, dental, vision, and life insurance paid by the employer, dependent insurance supplement paid by employer, and a required statewide retirement plan. Total number of hours worked per week and specific schedule will be determined when a job offer is made. Employee will work a Sunday to Thursday schedule, including some evenings, and will periodically need toadjust schedule to accommodate special programs and/or outreach events.
