What does a book cataloger do?

A Book Cataloger is responsible for organizing and maintaining records of books and other materials in libraries or archives. They analyze, classify, and describe items according to established cataloging standards, ensuring accurate and efficient retrieval by users. Book Catalogers assign subjects, create metadata, and input information into library databases, which helps library patrons and staff find and access resources more easily. Their work is essential for managing library collections and supporting research and learning.

To thrive as a Book Cataloger, you need a solid understanding of library science, metadata standards, and cataloging principles, often supported by a degree in library or information science. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), MARC records, and cataloging tools like OCLC Connexion is typically required.
