POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Broom Tractor Operator position serves as a key participant in the interaction between the Company (and other crew members), other contractors and our customers. The position is responsible for operating a variety of equipment in a safe and efficient manner, including broom tractor equipment and other related machinery.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Controls and actively participates in labor related activities on job sites during various stages of the project to ensure the accurate completion of the project. 
  • Operates a broom tractor in a safe manner.
  • Communicates with crew while on the job site, including the use of radios, hand signals, or other necessary forms of communication.
  • Provides clean-up behind a milling machine through the use of equipment with sweeper attachments.
  • Manipulates hand or foot levers to control movements of broom tractor on roadways and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, highways, etc.
  • Safety operators equipment within and out of work zones to sweep millings into a pile and away from adjacent roads if still useable by public travel for the bobcat operator to sweep up.
  • Provides clean-up behind a milling machine through the use of a skid steer with various attachments connect, such attachments include roto milling head, sweeper attachment and bucket attachment.
  • Manipulates hand or foot levers to control movements of skid steer on roadways and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, highways, etc.
  • Cleans up any loose particles left behind by other equipment.
  • Keeps milled surface and roadway clean of any loose particles.
  • While on a job site, may be responsible for appropriately marking manholes and water valves with spray paint to be avoided by the milling machine.
  • May be responsible for a variety of additional duties, such as working with a milling machine on job sites, and is responsible for:
    • actively communicating with the employee operating the machine;
    • ensuring the milling machine is clear of any debris or objects it could potentially hit, including remove millings that could hinder the operation of the machine;
    • assisting with changing carbide teeth in milling machine drum;
    • greasing the machine; and
    • maintaining the correct cutting depth.
  • May also be responsible for working with a clean-up crew on job sites, responsible for assisting equipment operators to ensure loose particles are removed from the milled and roadway surfaces using shovels, brooms or other methods to achieve a cleaned surface.
  • Other duties may include helping with traffic control set-up and taking down and tending a slow/stop sign to maintain safe public and worker travel through the work zone, loading and unloading equipment (including equipment from trucks), shovels dirt, gravel, and other materials. 
  • May performs work with all hand tools including but not limited to pneumatic or traditional hammers, drills, impact guns and grease guns.
  • May operate a variety of heavy mechanical equipment that requires technical expertise or specialized training.  Heavy mechanical equipment in addition to a water truck include but not limited to water trucks, milling machines, reclaimers, backhoes, skid steers, broom tractors and forklifts in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • Performs routine maintenance on broom tractors and other equipment, including Changing broom cores, oil changes, greasing the machine, changing cutting edges, carbide teeth, changing oil, air filter replacements, etc.). The operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance.
  • Advises the Foreman, Shop Manager and/or Mechanics of any requirements for maintenance or repairs. 
  • Ensure Company machines, equipment, vehicles, and tools and washed, cleaned and securely stored.
  • Responsible for informing management of any safety concerns; adheres to safety and work performance standards to comply with OSHA, company and other agency regulations. 
  • Maintains ability to travel up to 100% of time to various job sites, possibly including extended overnight stays.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Complete special projects as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) of direct work related experience.
  • Working knowledge of heavy equipment, processes, and safety protocols.
  • Valid CDL (Class A, B or C) preferred.
  • Valid driver license and acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT) and current OSHA rules and regulations and ensuring compliance with these guidelines.
  • Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods, in all types of weather and under various working conditions.
  • Proven effective oral and written communication skills, job planning skills and mechanical aptitude are a must.
  • Excellent attendance record and commitment to maintain the same.
  • Ability to work Monday through Sunday and overtime as required (including irregular hours, out of town work, overnight stays, weekends and holidays).
  • Overnight travel during high seasonal periods typically includes full work week, possibly including Saturdays/weekends. Employees typically return home for the weekend while traveling, but schedule may limit employee’s ability to return home to every other weekend. Travel is typically limited to NC, SC and VA.
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors and will be on their feet all day while either walking or standing.
  • Demonstrated skills in the care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment mechanical maintenance and repair work.
  • Reliable work ethic; regular attendance is required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds with co-workers, vendors, and subcontractors at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all departmental matters.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to operate varying types of machinery.
  • Must tolerate working environment with outside temperatures that include excessive heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
  • Must be able to work outside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts.
  • Must be able to push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds to an overhead position.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and twist body.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to use both hands and demonstrate good hand-eye coordination.
  • Tolerance to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Potentially exposed to contaminants, such as dust or fumes from exhaust; frequent exposure to hazardous equipment.
  • Occasionally work in very bright or very dim lighting conditions.
  • Are sometimes exposed to hazardous situations that produce cuts or minor burns.
  • Occasionally are exposed to whole body vibration, such as when using a jackhammer.
