What is a board member?

Board members are individuals elected or appointed to oversee the activities of an organization, typically at the highest level of governance. They are responsible for setting strategic direction, ensuring financial health, and upholding the organization's mission and values. Board members participate in decision-making, provide guidance to management, and ensure that the organization complies with relevant laws and regulations. Their role can vary depending on the organization, but they generally act in the best interest of stakeholders and the long-term success of the entity.

How do board members typically collaborate with executive leadership and other stakeholders to influence organizational strategy?

Board Members work closely with executive leadership by providing governance, oversight, and strategic direction during regular board meetings and committee sessions. They review and approve major organizational initiatives, offer guidance based on their expertise, and ensure accountability to stakeholders such as shareholders or community partners. Effective Board Members actively engage in constructive dialogue, balancing support and challenge to help the leadership team make informed decisions and navigate complex challenges. This collaborative approach ensures organizational goals align with the mission and long-term vision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a board member, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Board Member, you need strategic thinking, governance expertise, and a solid understanding of financial oversight, often supported by leadership experience and relevant industry knowledge. Familiarity with board management software, corporate governance frameworks, and compliance systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities are important to ensure responsible decision-making, organizational accountability, and effective leadership at the highest level.

Job description

About SNPT

SNPT is a global nonprofit on a mission to change the way the world rescues.

We believe lasting animal welfare doesnโ€™t come from reacting to suffering, it comes from preventing it.

SNPT operates high-volume, humane sterilization campaigns in regions overwhelmed by free-roaming animals and limited veterinary infrastructure. By combining sterilization and community education, we tackle the root causes of overpopulation and build sustainable, local solutions.

Our work creates a world where suffering is reduced before it begins, and where rescue becomes the exception, not the overwhelming norm.

SNPT is entering a key growth phase with passionate donors, global partnerships, and major expansion plans. We are seeking one exceptional lawyer to join our Board of Directors and help guide that growth with clarity, ethics, and strong governance.

The Role: Board Member

Weโ€™re seeking a mission-driven attorney who wants to bring their expertise to a high-impact, globally focused nonprofit.

You do not need nonprofit or international experience (though both are welcome).

You do need good judgment, a strategic mindset, and a heart for humane, preventive solutions.

Relevant Areas Might Include:

  • Corporate or transactional law
  • Nonprofit law
  • International/cross-border law (bonus, not required)
  • Risk management
  • Contracts & agreements
  • Governance & compliance
  • General counsel-style advisory experience

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Provide legal perspective as SNPT expands internationally
  • Strengthen governance, compliance, and policy frameworks
  • Advise on contracts, risk, ethical considerations, and partnerships
  • Support decision-making that ensures responsible, sustainable growth
  • Attend quarterly board meetings + occasional strategic conversations
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership

Why This Role Matters

Most welfare organizations try to rescue their way out of suffering.

SNPT is building a new model of rescue, one built on prevention, education, and scaling what works.

Your legal guidance will ensure this model grows ethically, sustainably, and globally.

Why Join SNPT?

  • Make immediate and long-term impact with your expertise
  • Join a passionate board where your voice directly shapes the future
  • Help build the infrastructure of a rising global nonprofit
  • Work alongside a visionary founder with a bold mission
  • Contribute to a world where humane solutions replace crisis-driven rescue
  • A fulfilling leadership opportunity for a lawyer who wants meaning behind their skills
