The BNSF RailwayEngineering Departmentis responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. Join our team and play a key role in shaping the future of freight transportation and make a significant contribution to one of the top railroads in North America.

Key responsibilities may include:

Track Standards and Preliminary Track Design
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of BNSFโ€™s standards for track design, including but notlimited to: new mainline facilities, new yards, industry track, servicing tracks, andintermodal facilities.
  • Ensure AREMA and BNSF design standards are in alignment and applied appropriately to the above projects. This includes track geometry andcomponent use, as well as subgrade, typical sections, and other right-of-way features.
  • Develop and make recommendations for improvements to BNSFโ€™s track and intermodal designs based on robust analyses and a focus on lowering risk and total life cycle costs (total cost of ownership)including design or review of rigid or flexible paving projects.
  • Utilizing survey data, design preliminary earthwork to support (plan linework, proposed CAD surface and cross sections) new track facilities across the BNSF network.
  • Develop preliminary (30%) plans which articulate earthwork quantities,right-of-way limits, and appropriate storm water management capabilities.
  • Calculate necessary hydraulics / hydrology calculations to size waterconveyance systems and/or site storm water needs.
  • Have a working knowledge of environmental permitting needs and options whichmay impact engineering design decisions including, but not limited to: site selection,construction means and methods, right-of-way impacts, land ownership risks, and totallife-cycle responsibilities.
  • Articulate life-cycle costs and risk management associated with variances of design,depending on case specific and use-specific characteristics.
  • Be a leader in BNSFโ€™s sustainability initiatives by incorporating the appropriate measureswith facility design and the construction means/methods that demonstrate BNSFโ€™s commitment to building sustainable infrastructure.
  • Provide concise reports, both written and oral, describing alternatives and provide clearrecommendations associated with a recommended preliminary (30%) engineering layoutfor every project.
  • Manage and coordinate sub-consultants as project requirements dictate including but not limited to: environmental, geotechnical, materials testing, permitting, property, traffic, structural and survey.
Training and Professional Development
  • Complete necessary training including,but not limited to, proficiency with CAD applications,track layout, drainage hydraulics/hydrology calculations, environmental permitting,subgrade, and sustainability practices.
  • Be fluent, and remain proficient, in MicroStation and associated add-on featuresassociated with earthwork design and preliminary plan development.
  • Encouraged to actively participate in at least one industry association (with manager approval for expenses) which has a direct impact on the development of projects at BNSF Railway.
  • Successful candidates are encouraged to seek additional credentials (PE, CFM, PMP, etc.), professional development, and/or additional coursework relative to BNSF Railway initiatives.
Partnering and Collaboration
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with other professionals in BNSFโ€™sEngineering team, as well as internal stakeholders such as the Signal, Transportation,Mechanical, and Environmental teams.
  • Influence and collaborate with BNSF operations staff and other professionals supporting business and staff functions to enable effective cross-functional partnering on design issue resolutions.
  • Collaborate with industry professional groups as needed, as well as building professionalrelations external peers as it pertains to BNSF Engineering projects.
  • May be asked to collaborate with city/state officials or private entities with leadership oversight.
  • As needed, collaborate with BNSF Finance, Real Estate team, or Marketing/Economic Development from conceptual to 30% stage prior to handoff to Project Engineers.
  • Partner with CAD Technicians on engineering design projects. Utilization of CAD Tech resources will fall under Gen. Director/Director Track Design discretion.
  • May interface with BNSF Technology Services GIS Team, gather existing GIS data needed for project planning, and provide related design efficiencies to team members.

Basic Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following professional skills and experience:

  • A Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil Engineeringor equivalent, relevantexperience.
  • 2-5 years minimum experience in the field of track and civildesign is strongly preferred.
  • Professional Engineer License (preferred for SB29, required for SB30/31).
  • Broad foundation of railroad engineering knowledge.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn/understand CAD.
  • Ability to gain fluency, and remain proficient, in MicroStation and associated add-on features associated with earthwork design and preliminary plan development.
  • Broad-based understanding of design practices recommended by AREMA.
  • Strong understanding of project development processes, from initial projectscoping and concept-level estimating, all the way through construction and in-servicing.
  • Experience with construction estimating, with a strong emphasis on financial acumen ofcreating project-specific estimates that can be effectively utilized for program planningand decision making.
  • Desirable to have additional experience in one of three civil engineering specialty areas:
  • With Geographic Information Systems projects utilizing ESRI GIS suite of products for projects requiring plan creation based on GIS data on hand.
  • With Hydrologic and Hydraulic projects utilizing HEC-RAS, HY8, Storm CAD or similar software for stormwater quality plan creation and H&H analysis including project site drainage planning.
  • With rigid and flexible pavement projects including course selection, subgrade improvements and maintenance issue resolution with a focus of reducing total life cycle cost.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communications skills; ability to communicate andrelate at all levels of the organization; ability to define and enforce standards wherenecessary in a persuasive and winning manner.
  • Excellent broad-based leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to build relationships, personal and organizational accountability, and fairness amongcolleagues and employees, particularly in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong reputation for integrity and ability to balance business partnership with the needto exercise independent judgment and to raise potentially sensitive or contentious issues in a timely and constructive manner.
