What is a BMC engineer?

A BMC Engineer is responsible for managing, configuring, and maintaining BMC Software solutions like BMC Remedy, Helix, or Control-M. They ensure smooth IT service management (ITSM), automation, and performance monitoring. Their role involves troubleshooting issues, optimizing workflows, and supporting integrations with other enterprise systems. BMC Engineers work closely with IT teams to improve efficiency and streamline business processes.

What does a BMC engineer do?

A typical day for a BMC Engineer involves monitoring and optimizing building management and control systems, responding to technical issues, and coordinating scheduled maintenance activities. You may perform on-site inspections, collaborate with other engineering and facility management professionals, and implement energy efficiency solutions. Additionally, BMC Engineers are often tasked with troubleshooting faults, updating system software, and providing technical support to building occupants or facilities staff. This dynamic role often requires balancing immediate operational needs with long-term system improvements.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a BMC engineer?

To thrive as a BMC Engineer, you need a thorough understanding of building management systems (BMS), HVAC controls, and electrical or mechanical engineering principles, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with BMS software platforms like Schneider, Honeywell, or Siemens, and relevant certifications (e.g., BMS or HVAC controls) are typically required. Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively communicate with facility teams and vendors are valuable soft skills. These competencies are crucial for ensuring seamless operation, maintenance, and optimization of complex building automation systems.

The company’s diverse product offerings span four major segments: smart consumer electronics, cloud, and networking solutions, computing, and various other components. Foxconn makes 40% of the consumer electronics that we find in our everyday lives. In recent years, Hon Hai has adopted the 3+3 strategy, focusing on three emerging industries - electric vehicles, digital health solutions, and robotics - while leveraging three key technologies: next-generation communications, artificial intelligence (AI), and semiconductors. Together, these initiatives position the company as a leader in innovation for the 21st century.

Hon Hai Technology Group is deeply committed to championing environmental sustainability within its manufacturing processes. By integrating sustainability into its operations framework, the company strives to serve as a best-practice model for global enterprises, enhancing corporate responsibility while meeting the growing demand for environmentally conscious production methods.

Job Summary:

The primary purpose of the AI Server / Rack R&D BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) Engineer (focused on L10/L11 execution) is to own the out-of-band management firmware initialization, system telemetry calibration, and remote monitor validation across fully integrated AI rack platforms. This role directly contributes by programming, testing, and debugging the specialized BMC microcontroller firmware (often based on Open BMC or AMI Mega RAC). This ensures that the entire 100kW+ rack infrastructure can be safely powered on, remotely monitored, thermally throttled, and diagnosed out-of-band by Tier-1 hyperscale operating frameworks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform BMC bring-up and validate out-of-band management functions for server platforms, including system monitoring, remote management, event logging, and hardware telemetry. Troubleshoot BMC-related issues and verify reliable communication between the BMC, system components, and management interfaces.
  • Configure and calibrate system sensors for temperature, voltage, current, fan speed, and power monitoring, and tune thermal and power protection thresholds to ensure accurate telemetry, safe system operation, and compliance with platform requirements.
  • Develop, customize, and validate Redfish API functionality to support server management and telemetry requirements while aligning BMC interfaces and data models with hyperscale customer profiles, platform specifications, and applicable management standards.
  • Analyze BMC event logs, hardware failure records, and diagnostic data to identify system faults and failure patterns. Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and validation teams to determine root causes, support corrective actions, and improve system reliability.
  • Develop and maintain automated scripts and tools for BMC firmware flashing, configuration, and validation to improve engineering efficiency and consistency. Implement and verify firmware changes associated with Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) to ensure proper deployment, traceability, and compliance with approved requirements.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science (with a strong foundation in embedded systems, Linux kernel development, or hardware-software interfacing), or Electrical Engineering (paired with extensive embedded firmware development experience)

Experience:

  • 1+ years of Embedded BMC Firmware Implementation & Testing
  • 1+ years of Hardware Sensor Bus Architecture & Communication
  • 1+ years of Redfish API & Hyperscale Management Protocol Customization
  • 1+ years of Hardware-Software System Bring-Up & Diagnostics

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Frequently remains stationary while performing BMC development, telemetry analysis, and diagnostic activities, with occasional movement within laboratory, server, and testing areas.
  • Frequently operates computers, server systems, and diagnostic/test equipment and occasionally handles server components, cables, and related hardware during system bring-up and troubleshooting.
  • Occasionally bends, reaches, crouches, or positions self to access server/rack equipment, inspect hardware connections, and perform configuration or validation activities.
  • Frequently exchanges technical information with hardware, firmware, validation, and cross-functional engineering teams to troubleshoot issues and coordinate technical changes.
  • Frequently works in office, engineering laboratory, and server/test environments and may be exposed to operating equipment, elevated noise levels, and temperature variations; appropriate PPE may be required.
