Job description

The mission of the Blue Springs Police Department is to provide the highest quality of police services to the Blue Springs community, by promoting a safe environment through police and citizen interaction, with emphasis on integrity, fairness, and professionalism.

THIS POSITION IS OPEN FOR CURRENT, POST CERTIFIED OFFICERS.

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs police work in enforcing laws and ordinances. Activities include preventing, detecting, and investigating crimes and apprehending suspects. Responds to calls from the public involving personal injury and provides assistance to citizens requesting service and/or information. Performs educational, victim-witness support, and problem-solving efforts.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Patrols designated areas of the city to preserve law and order, prevent and discover the commission of crimes, and enforce laws and ordinances.
  2. Response to citizen requests for service, aid, and information; renders assistance as needed.
  3. Responds to calls for police and medical emergency aid; evaluates the condition of injured persons at accident scenes, administers appropriate first aid and other medical type services in accordance with training and prescribed instructions.
  4. Transports patients to medical facilities as needed.
  5. Prepares reports, maintains records of investigations, and testifies in court.
  6. Conducts accident investigations and takes safeguards to prevent further accidents. Interviews drivers and witnesses and takes written statements.
  7. Examines condition of an accident scene and clears scene of obstructions and wreckage.
  8. Enforces traffic laws and ordinances.
  9. Obtains evidence and traces persons and vehicles in accidents or involved with vehicle code violations.
  10. Performs jail-related activities including booking, photographing, fingerprinting, housing, and releasing prisoners.
  11. Transports prisoners to other jail facilities as necessary and performs hourly jail checks of incarcerated prisoners.
  12. Completes documentation and conducts inquiries through the use of computerized equipment.

Officers may be assigned to various specialized positions such as Detective Unit, CYOU, Drug Task Force, etc., as needed by the department to carry out department objectives.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and Special License(s)/Certifications - Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of employment. High school diploma or equivalent. Certified as a Peace Officer in a First-Class County in Missouri or able to be certified. Requires valid driver's license.
  • Experience - None.
  • Skills - Skill in operating applicable tools and equipment, including personal computers and general office equipment. Knowledge of police principles, practices, methods, techniques, and equipment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of leadership, training, and supervision. Knowledge of related laws, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of city and surrounding area streets and physical layout.
  • Mental Requirements / Competencies - Ability to communicate effectively with the general public; Ability to speak and write the English language; ability to analyze situations and adapt quick, effective, reasonable, and lawful courses of action with due regard to officer and public safety and assist citizens with various service requests; knowledge of all areas of criminal investigation and techniques; knowledge of department goals; knowledge of local, state, and federal charter, ordinances, laws, regulations, and court cases pertaining to public safety and police patrol.
  • Physical Requirements - The Police Officer's physical job demands require occasional maximum lift of 130 lbs. knuckle to knuckle ht.; occasional maximum lift of 100 lbs. floor to waist; occasional maximum unilateral lift 22 lbs. floor to shoulder, usually sustained hold of at least 15 seconds; occasional maximum carry of 124 lbs. tactical gear; occasional maximum carry of 100 lbs. 10 ft; occasional maximum carry of 75 lbs. 50ft; occasional maximum horizontal push/pull force of 125 lbs.; frequent maximum horizontal push/pull force of 50 lbs.; occasional grip force of 60 lbs.; frequent maximum grip force of 25 lbs.; occasional maximum pinch force of 6 lbs.; frequent climb; frequent bend/crouch; occasional kneel/crouch; frequent trunk rotation; frequent forward reach; frequent hand coordination; frequent foot coordination; frequent sit; occasional running may be required, frequent stand and frequent walk.   • Additional Comments: - Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to human blood, body fluids, heavy machinery, excessive noise, hazardous chemicals, explosives, and all types of weather conditions is expected. This position contains an element of risk to personal safety.
